Australian War Memorial's marble scars: New reflections a year on

Australian War Memorial

Sydney based artist Alex Seton will be visiting the Australian War Memorial on Thursday, marking the first anniversary of the installation of his work, For Every Drop Shed in Anguish.

The evocative marble installation honours those who carry the burden of service in unseen ways.

Memorial Director Matt Anderson said the sculpture has provided a powerful space for personal connection.

“Alex Seton's work has become a place of solace, drawing thousands to reflect on the sacrifices of war and service in a deeply personal way,” he said.

“A year on, its impact is clear. People leave flowers, notes, and cards. Children run around it, adults engage with it—it has become more than an artwork; it's a living memorial.”

Installed on the Memorial grounds a year ago, the artwork has become a place of reflection, remembrance, and engagement.

Unveiled on 22 February 2024, the sculpture has been described as a striking departure from traditional war monuments.

Visitors are greeted with a field of 18 imperfect marble droplets, which embody the unseen wounds of war—grief, resilience, and survival.

“Each drop, appearing delicate yet carved from enduring marble, speaks to both the hidden scars of service and to the strength and resilience of our veterans and their families,” Mr Anderson said.

Artist Alex Seton, who made a visit to the Memorial a year after he installed the work, hopes the work fosters reflection and connection.

Senior Curator of Art Anthea Gunn said: “Alex Seton and the Australian War Memorial worked closely with families and veterans on this sculpture, to create a new way to remember and understand the impacts of service on individuals and their loved ones.”

Artist Alex Seton said: "I'm very glad that the work in the gardens is being embraced by the community , and it's truly gratifying to see people sitting with the work and using the space in many ways, from paying quiet tribute or simply reflecting whilst having lunch."

"An unexpectedly moving part of the last year is witnessing the tributes that have been left at the base of the droplets, from photographs to flowers, letters and other mementos. I'm heartened this work could provide that space to families snd loved ones."
