Skyros Holidays Introduces New Courses Celebrating Skyrian Heritage and the Pursuit of Areté

Skyros Island, in the southern Sporades islands of Greece, is renowned for its authentic Greek culture and unspoiled natural beauty. In a recent move to preserve its unique character, the island's local council unanimously rejected a proposed urban development plan aimed at expanding tourism infrastructure, including marinas and cruise ship docks.

This commitment to tradition over mass tourism aligns seamlessly with the philosophy of Skyros Holidays. For over 45 years, Skyros has been Europe's leading provider of holistic retreats for solo travelers, offering creative experiences such as writing, art, yoga, wellness, and activity holidays on this magical island.

Retreats are designed to immerse guests in the local culture, utilising local facilities and favouring local produce and services. This approach not only provides an authentic experience but also directly benefits the local economy, ensuring that tourism development does not compromise the island's natural resources.

At the heart of the offerings is the Skyros Centre, a creative retreat nestled within the traditional white cube-shaped houses of Skyros Town, home of the famed Writers lab. Here, guests can participate in masterclasses focusing on writing, health, and wellbeing, complemented by drop-in classes in yoga, Greek language, art, and singing. Staying in traditional Skyrian accommodation, participants are encouraged to explore the village and its long, sandy beaches, fully immersing themselves in the local lifestyle.

Skyros Holidays are excited to introduce three unique courses for 2025 that exemplify our commitment to cultural immersion, personal growth, and the pursuit of areté—the ancient Greek ideal of excellence in mind, body, and spirit:

A Taste of Greece with Carl Smith
Sat 21 Jun - Sat 28 Jun 2025 and Sat 28 Jun - Sat 5 Jul 2025. Offered at the Skyros Centre, this culinary masterclass provides a hands-on journey through the island's seasonal flavours. Participants will engage in foraging, visit artisanal food producers and winemakers, and, of course, cook traditional Greek dishes. This immersive experience not only enhances cooking skills but also deepens understanding of Greek culture through its cuisine.

Colour Me Greek with Theresa Amarilio
Scheduled for three weeks between 31 May and 20 June 2025, this innovative afternoon course combines art and language learning. Through the use of color and art, participants will begin speaking basic Greek within hours, practicing in situ while on Skyros island. The method focuses on listening and speaking, without the pressure of writing, making Greek an integral part of the holiday experience and fostering closer connections with the friendly Skyrians.

Astronomy: The Wonders of Space with Rita Roushdy
Sat 30 - Fri 12 Sep 2025, Experience the brilliance of the Skyros sky after sunset in Atsitsa Bay, where minimal light pollution gives way to an awe-inspiring canopy of stars. This Astronomy course celebrates these dark skies by guiding participants to observe constellations up close, discover ancient myths, and marvel at the celestial wonders that have shaped Greek lore for centuries.

By choosing Skyros Holidays, travellers can explore the island's rich history, traditional architecture, and stunning beaches, all while contributing to a sustainable tourism model that respects and preserves the island's heritage.
