Isère hosts numerous trail events every year for every kind of runner, from one of the most challenging ultra marathons in the world to events suitable for enthusiastic novices. During the summer of 2025, the region will host two internationally renowned races and, in doing so, will welcome more than 11,000 participants and their companions. The 13th edition of the Echappée Belle and the 10th edition of the Skyrace des Matheysins have long been major events in summer sporting calendars and Isère is delighted to be hosting them once more.
The legendary race across the Belledone massif, L'Echappée Belle. August 22 to 24, 2025.
An exceptional trail L'Echappée Belle is one of the most intense ultra races on the international circuit, a beautiful but extremely demanding trail across the Belledone massif. This unique trail is characterised by its technical demands: a glacier crossing (Freydane), 15 passes and 40 kilometres above 2,000 metres. The highest point of the race, the Cross of Belledone, reaches 2,930 metres. Created in 2013, the race has become a symbol of the region and every year welcomes some of the best trail runners in the world to complete the extraordinary adventure.
Beyond the trailIn addition to the challenge itself, organisers have long wanted to raise awareness of different issues linked to the mountain and its environments. The “Beyond the trail” initiative, aims to raise awareness and strengthen ties between the different communities within the Belledonne massif (athletes, shepherds, towns etc..)

The 10th edition of the Matheysins SkyRace. April 19 & 20, 2025. In 2016, a small group of trail enthusiasts decided to organise a skyrunning race that was intense, fast, technical, friendly and local. The result? The Matheysins SkyRace®!
Three years later, in 2019, the Matheysins SkyRace® joined the elite ranks of high altitude endurance races when it was inaugurated into the Skyrunner World Series (SWS), the skyrunning world cup. Today, this mountain race has a well-justified reputation of being one of the most challenging and competitive in the world, a race that is both physically and mentally demanding. The Matheysins SkyRace is an unforgettable experience unique to Isère.
A legendary journeyThe Matheysins SkyRace has followed the same exact route since 2019: Devil's Path, Perolier, Wolf's Ears, Tabor, Piquet de Nantes… There are steep slopes in parts where sticks are a good idea but these will need to be stored away in the technical sections in order to be able to hold the ropes steady.
Since 2020, the race has been filmed in its entirety and broadcast live on television and on social networks, something that is a challenge for everyone involved!
Beyond the trailIn addition to the main Matheysins SkyRace there are three additional - and more accessible - races offered. The Marmotte is a small, 12km trail run that has welcomed runners since 2011. Additional trails include the 18km SkyTrail that is technically challenging but less intense than the SkyRace, and the SkyTour, a 42km trail with some technical sections. Whichever trail you choose, we guarantee an incredible atmosphere.

L'Isère: situated at the heart of the French Alps Isère has long been a winter favourite with skiers and boarders but this beautiful region is just as popular in the spring and summer months. The four massifs - Belledonne, Chartreuse, Vercors and Oisans - hide a multitude of adventures from trail running, hiking, lake swimming, and biking to more sedate pursuits including one of the best jazz festivals in the country, 'Jazz à Vienne'. Like much of France, Isère enjoys an exciting culinary scene with unique specialities including Grenoble walnuts (best enjoyed in a tarte aux noix), Bonnat chocolates (France's oldest chocolate makers), and the Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage cheese. Not forgetting, of course, the rare Charteuse liqueur, which is still made by Carthusian monks from an 18th century recipe.
