Uber-Remote Expedition-Style Treks Successfully Organised in the Himalayas During 2024

The Mountain Company

Devon, UK:

At The Mountain Company, we are a specialist operator organising both camping and lodge treks in the Himalayas and Karakoram. The style choice will depend on the type of experience each trekker is looking for, the dates available to travel, and their budget. Sometimes people come for the first time on a lodge-based trek and then come back later on when more experienced for a camping trek.

In Nepal, there are many teahouse lodge-based treks. These are located in the Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga regions. Lodge treks will be much busier with other trekkers as they are more accessible. It is relatively easy to find accommodation and the trails are better maintained. Whereas a camping-style trek requires more logistics and trip planning. We have to be self-sufficient so we need to bring our tents, camping equipment, and food provisions.

Last year, our trekking groups successfully completed some of the most remote treks in the Himalayas. The feedback received has been very positive with 5-star AITO Reviews. We organised the following camping treks in 2024:

Far West Nepal Exploratory GHT (Nepal): In May/ June 2024, Ade Summers led our Far West Nepal Exploratory GHT trek successfully crossing the Nying La (5,470m). Very few groups have ever been over this pass! It is wonderful to know it is still possible to find uber-remote trails like this in Nepal. To find out how they got along you can read our Trip Report for Far West Exploratory GHT in May/ June 2024. Copied below is an AITO Review submitted on July 3rd, 2024:

"The Far West Nepal Exploratory GHT trek is a +20 day trek to a very remote region of western Nepal. This area is rarely visited by Westerners and you are likely to see very few other trekkers. The landscape is varied and you'll pass through forest, high alpine desert, river valleys, villages, and mountain passes meeting only a few local yak and goat herders. The trip included crossing the Nying La pass at 5400 meters (which only very few people ever does!) and visiting the Mount Kailash viewpoint on the border with Tibet. Later the trek passes through villages with visits to very old Gompas (Buddhist temple) with impressive wall paintings. The trek is remote and includes a good amount of travel but is well worth the effort!"

Kanchenjunga Base Camp to Makalu Base Camp GHT (Nepal): In October 2024, Robert Mads Anderson led our Kanchenjunga Base Camp to Makalu Base Camp GHT trek. This is our longest-ever trek at 37 days and it is the third time lucky as we finally cracked the logistics! To find out how they got along you can read our Trip Report for Kanchenjunga BC to Makalu BC Autumn 2024. Copied below is an AITO Review submitted on 28/11/2024:

"This is a 35-day camping trek following a section of the Great Himalaya Trail. An epic, long, difficult camping trek for experienced hikers and campers. I loved the remoteness of the regions visited, starting in the rain forest and walking up to Pangpema (5,143m) at the northside base camp of Kanchenjunga. Many thanks to the local trek team and Roland Hunter for putting his heart and soul into organizing treks offered by the Mountain Company."

Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT (Nepal): In May/ June 2024, Natalia Wilson led our Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT trek in Nepal. This was our updated itinerary exiting Upper Dolpo over the Ghami La pass rather than Sangda La where the new road goes. As one of the group mentioned in his AITO Traveller Review, "The new exit via the Ghami La adds to this trip, being very remote, using a route that is rarely taken even by the local herders and traversing terrain that is stunning in its beauty and isolation. This is well worth the extra cost for the additional Mustang permit." To find out how they got along you can read our Trip Report for Upper Dolpo to Jomsom GHT in May/ June 2024. Copied below is an AITO Review from submitted on 25/06/2024:

"This has to be one of the top treks in the Himalayas. It is long (4 weeks, 350km), high (average altitude 4,000m, max altitude 5,700m) and challenging (most days over seven hours walking, two rest days). But the international leader and the local guides took care that I could manage. It is very rewarding. Every day was different as we passed through forests, next to lakes, over high barren boulder strewn passes, through arid valleys and wading rivers. We visited a number of temples, all very different, and met and chatted with some of the monks. We were excited to see paw prints of snow leopard, to hear a cuckoo at over 4,000m and to gaze at soaring eagles and vultures. The new exit via the Ghami La adds to this trip, being very remote, using a route that is rarely taken even by the local herders and traversing terrain that is stunning in its beauty and isolation."

Ladakh Sky Trail GHT (India): In August/ September 2024, Almas Khan led our Ladakh Sky Trail GHT. For 2024, we updated and improved the itinerary and the feedback from the group was very positive. To find out how they got along you can read our Trip Report for Ladakh Sky Trail GHT in August/ September 2024. Copied below an AITO Review submitted on 12/09/2024:

"On 8 August I arrived in Leh, the capital of Ladakh in the extreme NW of India, (often referred to as Little Tibet). This was the start of a 24-day visit to this little-visited area for a remote 17-day trek in rocky but stunningly beautiful mountain scenery intercepted by deep green river gorges. We camped in some amazing locations accessible only to trekkers where we were looked after so well by our guides and crew."

Lunana Snowman (Bhutan): In September/ October 2024, Almas Khan also led our Lunana Snowman in Bhutan. You can read our Trip Report for Lunana Snowman in Autumn 2024. Copied below an AITO Review submitted on 04/12/2024:

"I loved returning to do the Bhutan Snowman trek with The Mountain Company. It is a sublime high altitude trek with exceptional scenery, in which you get into the rhythm of this long journey of wonders - spectacular mountains, beautiful mossy forests and wild rivers. Parts are very wild and remote, other parts gave us really interesting interactions with local people. The whole trekking party (leaders, crew and trekkers) was agile and very harmonious - full of adventure and laughter. Much banter focussed on the seriously amazing food. I ate a lot better on the trek than I do at home! There are few places in the world where you can experience on a supported trek such astonishingly beautiful wild scenery. We met only a handful of other trekking groups in the earlier sections of the trek and for our last two weeks of the trek - no other trekkers. Therein lies the magic of the Snowman trek."
