Chocolate Gannets Beachfront Villas are an award-winning luxury villa accommodation at the heart of the Great Ocean Road. They stand out for their extraordinary location across the beach and their mesmerising spa baths with unrivalled views next to a fireplace for the best experience. What is less known is the commitment of Chocolate Gannets to having a positive impact on the environment and their multi-faceted approach to sustainable tourism.
Leading the Way in Responsible Tourism
Chocolate Gannets' commitment to sustainability is evident across all its operations, with numerous initiatives designed to protect the environment and support local communities.
The Koala Track: Revitalizing Land and Supporting Wildlife
When Lili and Xavier took over Chocolate Gannets in 2009, the land behind the villas was an overgrown scrub, dominated by invasive weed species. In response, they embarked on an ambitious land management project to restore balance and enhance biodiversity across the 100-acre property.
The Koala Track was created as a central feature of this project. Over 3,000 exclusively native Australian plants were introduced, supporting local wildlife including koalas, birds, and insects. The plant selection was carefully curated to align with the local ecosystem. The project was made possible with the support of the Southern Otways Landcare Group, whose expertise and nursery supplies were essential to its success.
Key Features of the Koala Track:
- Upcycled Materials: The track features benches and steps made from reclaimed railway sleepers
- Artistic Vision: A striking 2.4-meter sphere sculpture created from discarded railway pins by local Torquay artists serves as the centrepiece of the track, symbolizing the marriage of creativity and conservation.
- Guest Experience: The path offers guests an immersive experience, allowing them to connect with nature while learning about the importance of ecosystem preservation.
“We wanted to create something functional but meaningful,” said Lili and Xavier. “The Koala Track is a testament to our love for this land and our dedication to sustainability. It's an experience that celebrates both nature and human creativity.”
Ongoing Sustainability Efforts
Chocolate Gannets is also focused on reducing its environmental impact through various initiatives:
- 1% For The Planet Membership: As a member of 1% For The Planet, Chocolate Gannets donates 1% of revenue (not profit!) to environmental organizations. We have three major recipients for our donations, and they are all located in the Otways, providing a concrete and tangible positive effect on the local environment. We choose to donate to the Conservation Ecology Centre in Cape Otway, Southern Otways Landcare Network and Southern Otways Sustainable. These three associations work hard to conserve the natural habitat and promote cleaner energy use in Apollo Bay and the Otways in general.
- The property also prioritizes supporting local businesses, sourcing most items for the breakfast hamper from the region, and working with suppliers who share their commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. For example, Goodwill Wines are our wine supplier and they give 50% of their profits to the charity of our choosing. Who Gives a Crap are also one of our suppliers with a social cause, and EcoLinen who provide our linen are focussed on using only organic cotton and improving the supply chain of cotton products.
- Waste Reduction: By transitioning to bulk toiletry refills, using biodegradable slippers, and eliminating single-use plastics, the property minimizes waste.
- Electric Vehicle Accessibility: Free EV fast chargers is available for guests.
