From Family Blockbuster to the Biggest Adventure of Them All: The Family Holiday

Original Travel

Original Travel highlights the destinations set to star in 2025's biggest family film and TV releases

Set-jetting is a trend that gets bigger every year, with 2023 seeing viewers of White Lotus, The Bear and Emily in Paris flocking to the starring locations; a new development is that this trend is now informing family holidays too.

Original Travel's recent research into family travel revealed that 63.9% of children are also inspired to travel to film locations, citing the likes of Paddington, Encanto and The Lion King in particular. Given that two of these titles will be hitting the cinemas again shortly - alongside other family favourites of Moana and Wednesday – we expect 2025 will be the biggest year for set-jetting yet.

Here's how to turn an armchair adventure into an actual adventure:

Moana 2 (November 2024) - French Polynesia
Three years after the success of the first film, Moana is back with a sequel and set to be released on 29 November 2024. The island princess will be embarking on a new journey in search of her ancestors beyond the ocean; throw in a couple of sea monsters along the way, as well as the voice acting of Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho and Nicole Scherzinger and you have yourself an epic tale! Set off on your own seafaring adventure with Original Diving's French Polynesia Diving and Culture Combo itinerary, an 18-day holiday that will take your family from the turquoise lagoons of Huahine to the coral reefs of Raiatea and Taha'a. Your family's quest will entail visiting Huahine's temples, while hearing stories about the original ancestors of the Tahitians: the Lapita people, making friends with local farmers and collecting shiny treasures at a pearl farm on Taha'a and of course, plenty of marine adventures with kayaking, snorkeling and for the older ones, diving, on offer!
From £3,802pp for an 18-day trip, based on a family of four. Price includes all flights, transfers, private tours, diving hire, a private boat ride excursion and 11 nights' hotel and overwater beach lodge accommodation. Original Diving, 020 7978 0505, www.originaldiving.com

Paddington in Peru (November 2024) - Peru
Paddington in Peru sees the much-loved, marmalade-eating bear packing his suitcase to go on a quest to Peru, an adventure which will lead him into the Amazon rainforest and Peruvian mountains and which you can emulate on Original Travel's Family Peruvian Adventure. The nine-day trip aptly includes a trip to see some of Paddington's relatives at a spectacled bear sanctuary, as well as Peruvian pottery lessons, a cookery lesson, visiting the 'lost city' Machu Picchu, having a masterclass with a chocolatier, go paddle boarding and white-water rafting. All you need to remember are the marmalade sandwiches.  From £4,325pp based on a family of four. Price includes all flights, transfers, overland transport and eight nights' hotel accommodation.  Original Travel, 020 3582 4990, www.originaltravel.co.uk

Mufasa: The Lion King (December, 2024) - Kenya
Mufasa: The Lion King is a live-action prequel set to be released on 20 December 2024, the 20th anniversary year of the original. As a result, we predict a renewed interest for family holidays to Kenya, the country that inspired the original movie and does so again. Voiced by Aaron Pierre, Seth Rogen and Kelvin Harrison JR, the movie explores the origins of Mufasa. For children wanting to see the wildlife for real, Original Travel's Simba and Friends itinerary is a bumper 15-day family safari, which includes a stay at Giraffe Manor, a picnic at the real life 'Pride Rock' in Laikipia, the Masai Mara where you can see Scar's hyena pals, as well as elephants, giraffes and lots of Pumbas.
From £9,250pp, based on a family of four. Price includes all flights, transfers and overland transport and 13 nights' accommodation. Original Travel, 020 3582 4990, www.originaltravel.co.uk

Wednesday Season 2 (September 2025) - Romania
With season 2 of Netflix's TV show (and teen favourite), Wednesday announced for September 2025 there has never been a better time to plan a family holiday to its filming location of Romania.  Original Travel's Creepy Castles, Vampires and Bears trip is suitably spooky for fans of the show. Starting in Bucharest, where the family can visit the same botanical gardens featured in Wednesday's world, the week will be jam-packed with adventures such as a house tour of Dracula's Peles Castle, navigating constellations with a local astronomer, going on a bear hunt in Piatra Craiului National Park, learning the ways of a beekeeper in the UNESCO-listed town of Sighisoara and visiting ancient (and potentially haunted) medieval citadels.
From £3,290pp for a 7-day trip, based on a family of four. Price includes flights, transfers, a bear spotting experience, guided tour of Piatra Craiului National Park and Vlad the Impaler's castle and 6 nights' hotel and B&B accommodation. Jurassic World 4 (2025) - Thailand and Malta
We have come a long way from the iconic helicopter scene over Hawaii's Manawaiopuna Falls in 1993's cult movie, Jurassic Park and with the seventh movie hitting the big screen next year, the franchise is being given another fresh look. The upcoming film will not only see a new cast, but new film locations too, with Thailand acting as the latest setting. Take your little paleontologists' dreams to the next level with Original Travel's 12-day family adventure in Thailand, filled with beaches, jungle and of course, adventure. Stay amongst the 'dinosaurs' in your very own treehouse in the uncharted forests of Khao Sok National Park, study ancient paintings in the caves of Tam Klang and Pi Hua To with an expert geologist and even star in your family's very own adventure 'blockbuster' sailing a traditional long tail boat through the mangroves of the Garos Peninsula.
From £2,895pp for a 12-day trip, based on a family of four. Price includes all flights, transfers, a range of activities, workshops and tours, and 10 nights' hotel and B&B accommodation. Original Travel, 020 3582 4990, www.originaltravel.co.uk

Lilo & Stitch (live action – 2025) - Hawaii
With the upcoming live-action version of the Disney classic, Lilo & Stitch, why not take the time to value the importance of 'ohana' with a family bucket-list trip to Hawaii? Very little has been revealed about the film, except that filming is taking place on the North Shore, in particular the town of Haleiwa on O'ahu island. This laid-back town is as charming as it is small, home to locally owned boutiques, surf shacks and colourful juice bars. The island's beaches also offer a variety from the family-friendly Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park to the Banzai Pipeline, aka THE spot to catch some professional surfing in action. On our Family Fun in Los Angeles and Hawaii split your time between the sunny LA and the glorious islands of O'ahu and Maui, with incredible experiences lined up along the way: from horse riding around Haleakula Volcano, watersports on your choice of O'ahu's 125 beaches, surfing lessons in Kaanapali and the cherry on top, tickets to California's Disneyland on your return. Keep an eye out along the way for dolphins, turtles, and of course, your cheeky extraterrestrial friend, Stitch.
From £6,270pp for a 15-day trip, based on a family of four. Price includes all flights, transfers, hire-car, surfing lessons, tickets to Disneyland theme parks, tickets to Warner and Universal Studios and 14 nights' hotel accommodation. Original Travel, 020 3582 4990, www.originaltravel.co.uk
