Hull's links to Hollywood have been brought to life as the set-jetting city launches a new AR digital version of its popular TV and movie map.
Visitors have been able to discover more about famous film and TV locations in the city thanks to a new trail which has already seen more than 4,000 leaflets distributed since being published earlier this year.
Now, hot on the heels of the release of the latest blockbuster to be filmed in the city – acclaimed British director Steve McQueen's new movie Blitz – the It must be Hullywood trail has gone digital with augmented reality.
Already out in cinemas, the wartime drama starring Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson and Stephen Graham will stream globally on Apple TV+ from 22 November.
Filming took place at locations across Hull in 2023, including Hull Old Town, Hepworth Arcade and Walton Street fairground, using more than 750 extras. Red buses, vintage lamp posts and shops were given a make-over to become 1940s London.
Hull's streets have become a popular star-spotting spot, offering the chance to follow in the footsteps of global stars from Henry Cavill and Millie Bobby Brown to Peter Capaldi and Dev Patel, as well as Jenna Coleman and David Jason.
Blitz is just the latest supporting role for Hull, now dubbed Hullywood thanks to its growing role as a TV and movie location – including smash-hit Netflix productions, The Crown and Enola Holmes 2, as well as cinema hit The Extraordinary Life of David Copperfield.
And to celebrate the launch of the virtual reality trail – available through the What Was Here app – TransPennine Express has also unveiled a new mural by local artist Andy Pea at Hull's Paragon Interchange, celebrating the city's movie links as well as local talent.
Like the printed map, Hullywood Digital guides TV and movie enthusiasts to key filming locations across the city, allowing users to immerse themselves in movie scenes.
It features locations from Netflix's hugely popular Enola Holmes 2, along with the streaming giant's worldwide sensation The Crown (2023) and its science fiction mystery thriller Bodies (2023), while movie roles include The Personal History of David Copperfield (2020).
Thanks to the labyrinth of cobbled streets and historic townhouses of the Old Town, the city is especially popular with filmmakers wanting to recreate street scenes from Victorian London, including for Victoria, with Jenna Coleman.
