The rare Corpse Plant (Amorphophallus Titanum or Titan Arum) is blooming in Geelong, and it’s causing quite the stink!

To see an Amorphophallus Titanum bloom is a rare and special event. Most plants require seven to ten years to produce their first bloom, and only open every four to five years thereafter.

The bloom comes with a powerful odour that’s, well… unique. Think dead corpse (hence the name) and rotten fish. The odour pulses out of the flower, so you may not smell it right away, but wait for the intense aroma to come your way.

The Geelong Botanic Gardens was gifted two Amorphophallus Titanum corms from the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium of South Australia in 2021. Each year the corms produce a giant leaf, and each year the leaf dies back into the corm and is dormant.

The plant is estimated to bloom for 24-48 hours. The Gardens will have extended opening hours for media and visitors during this time.

Address: Geelong Botanic Gardens, Corner Podbury and Eastern Park Drives, East Geelong
