Monaco is set to celebrate its National Day on 19 November 2024, a cherished annual event that brings together the Principality's residents, visitors, and the Princely family in a celebration of the country's rich heritage, unity, and cultural vitality.
A day of pride and tradition
Monaco's National Day holds deep historical significance, dating back to 1857 when it was established by Prince Charles III. Each reigning sovereign selects the day in honour of their patron saint, with the current celebration falling on the feast day of Saint Rainier, chosen by Prince Rainier III and upheld by His Serene Highness Prince Albert II. The festivities begin with an official Mass held at Monaco's grandiose Saint Nicholas Cathedral, attended by the Princely family, government dignitaries, and local citizens. This religious ceremony is a pivotal moment in the day's events, symbolising Monaco's deep-rooted traditions and the enduring connection between the Monegasque people and their ruling family.
A royal ceremony at the Prince's Palace
One of the most anticipated highlights of National Day is the ceremonial proceedings at the Prince's Palace. Each year, the Palace's forecourt becomes the setting for an impressive military parade, attended by the Princely family and local dignitaries. Dressed in formal attire, the Palace Guards perform precision drills as part of this regal tradition, which attracts spectators from around the world.
The Prince's Palace, with its 13th-century origins, stands as a testament to Monaco's storied past, offering a stunning backdrop to this day of celebration. Its majestic presence reinforces the Principality's deep connection to its royal lineage and commitment to preserving its heritage.
A new tradition: the dazzling drone show
In a nod to Monaco's forward-thinking innovation, this year's National Day will feature a dazzling drone show with 800 drones on Port Hercule. This high-tech spectacle underscores the Principality's embrace of cutting-edge technology while continuing its commitment to sustainability by offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional fireworks.
Under the leadership of Prince Albert II, Monaco has taken significant steps to champion environmental preservation and sustainable development, reinforcing its position as a global leader in eco-friendly initiatives. Monaco National Day serves as a reminder of the Principality's commitment to both its historical roots and its ambitious future.
A cultural extravaganza
Monaco's National Day is also a cultural celebration, with a schedule of public events and performances that showcase the Principality's vibrant arts scene. Highlights include an evening of classical music performed by the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, ballet performances by the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, and exhibitions at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (NMNM). For a festive evening, visitors can head to the Condamine Market to savour local Monegasque specialties, such as barbajuan, immersing themselves in the vibrant flavours of the Principality while celebrating with the community.
An invitation to the world
Monaco extends an open invitation to join the National Day celebrations to witness the unique charm of Monaco, where tradition meets modernity, and heritage is celebrated in every corner of this extraordinary destination.
