Aussies are heading to the US to witness first-hand the knife-edge election battle between Trump and Harris.
Australians, and a few Kiwis too, make up more than half the number of tourists joining UK tour operator Political Tour's trips to key swing states of Michigan and Pennsylvania at the end of the month. The tours, three in total, all in end in Washington DC and run from October 30 to November 6.
The UK based company, which specialises in correspondent-led trips, will take travellers to elections rallies and arrange meetings with voters and campaign organisers. The groups will be in Washington on election day as people head to the polls.
“We have had to introduce two more tours in response to the demand, most of it from Australia,” said Nicholas Wood, the former New York Times and BBC reporter who founded Political Tours.
The company, which was founded in 2011, has covered every US Presidential election since 2012 (with one exception in 2020!) and covered midterms and the Iowa Caucuses.
“We've found that Australians are avid fans of the US political game, staying up into the small hours at home watching the likes of Fox news and CNN,” said Wood. “Now they can experience it all in person with us, and with top correspondent or political analyst on hand as their guides.”

More about Political Tours
The UK based company aims to give travellers a better understanding of issues and places in the news. The trips are exceptional, expert led and as customers frequently say provide the experience of a lifetime.
All their tours are led by journalists or leading political experts. The company, which was founded in 2011, has covered every major US election since 2012 as well as midterm elections and the Iowa Caucuses. Recent trips include Colombia's peace-process, A Divided Cyprus and A United Ireland.
Currently there are 32 travellers across three tours. Australians and New Zealanders number 17. The remaining participants from the UK, Europe and South Africa.
“This is an election on a knife-edge, and likewise our tour will be edgy and off the beaten track, giving people a real feel for what Americans are thinking in the run up to election day,” said Nicholas Wood, the former NYT correspondent and Political Tours founder.
“For anyone who wants to understand why and how Americans might vote for Trump again, or for Kamala, nothing else beats it!”
