On 5 September 2024, Hoshino Resorts will open KAI Okuhida in Okuhida-Onsengo, the 24th property of the KAI brand and Hoshino Resorts' first venture in Gifu Prefecture.
Established with the concept “Wake up to a scenic mountain hot spring and relax in a traditional Hida-designed inn,” KAI Okuhida's architecture and design will showcase the regional culture and stunning skills of local Hida craftsmen.
Surrounded by the famous peaks of the Northern Alps, Okuhida-Onsengo has one of the largest water volumes and quantity of hot springs in Japan. Its locale in the heart of the mountains is where one can appreciate the scenery of the changing of seasons. Okuhida-Onsengo is also a base for some of Japan's most famous mountain sightseeing spots: Hida Takayama and UNESCO World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go as well as Kamikochi, Norikura, and Shinhotaka.
The unique outdoor architecture of KAI Okuhida comprises two accommodation buildings, a bathhouse, and an annex building which are connected by a courtyard, a crossroad, and an alley space. Guests can enjoy the fresh mountain air while wearing Japanese sandals as they walk to the foot baths located throughout the premises.
At night, lanterns will illuminate the alley space, an outdoor area where one can enjoy peace and calm away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
All 49 guest rooms are designed as KAI Signature Rooms, 28 of which have outdoor hot spring baths on their terraces for guests to enjoy a relaxing bath in their own private space. All rooms feature contemporary decorations produced with local craft traditions for an immersive regional cultural stay.
The modern headboard covering the bed has a unique shape inspired by the graceful wave of “mageki,” Hida's renowned wood bending technique while the original “Hida-shunkei” lacquerware wall art from Takayama City utilises techniques that have been handed down since the Edo period.
KAI Okuhida will serve a Kaiseki style dinner featuring Gifu prefecture's signature Hida Beef, one of the leading brands of wagyu in Japan that is favoured for its tender meat and high-quality fat content.
