The gorgeous sandy beach, labyrinth of medieval cobbled streets and guaranteed seal sightings make this picturesque seaside resort one of France's best-kept secrets, and it's the perfect place for a short break this summer with DFDS.

With its winding cobbled streets lined with charming flower-strewn houses, majestic medieval ramparts and breathtaking views across the Somme Bay and the English Channel, it is no surprise that Saint-Valery-sur-Somme has been listed as one of the Most Beautiful Detours in France.

With the warmer weather finally here, this little-known jewel on the north French coast is a seaside sanctuary where you can ditch the crowds and get your fill of delicious food, spectacular scenery, and peace and quiet on an idyllic getaway. At just 80 minutes from Calais it's the perfect place for a day trip or to use as a base to explore the beautiful Somme Valley on a short break with DFDS.

Saint-Valery-sur-Somme boasts a rich history dating back over a thousand years. William the Conqueror assembled his fleet here before sailing across to claim the English throne in 1066, and France's most famous authors Jules Verne and Victor Hugo spent their summers in their seaside villas, enjoying the town's inspirational surroundings.

The Courtgain district is the historic heart of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, where colourful shuttered cottages covered with flowers line the cobbled streets - ideal for that perfect Instagram moment. The journey up to the Porte Jeanne d'Arc at the top of the village rewards you with stunning views across the Somme Bay and the vast, beautiful marshes on its northern shores. Make sure to stop by the Seafarer's Chapel too, a favourite spot with the locals that is particularly beautiful at sunset.

One reviewer said: “The village is a delight. The houses are amazing and the medieval city is an absolute gem”.

Some of the most luxurious houses in town line the gorgeous riverside promenade, from classic Belle Epoque villas to modern mansions. Walk all the way to the end to find cool beach bar La Buvette de la Plage and a glorious sandy beach that's perfect for sunbathing with a cocktail or glass of wine.

What truly sets Saint-Valery-sur-Somme apart is its stunning natural surroundings. Cycling is a fantastic way to see the wonders of the Somme Bay, and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is the best place to begin any adventure, but for a more laid-back way to explore, take a boat trip around the bay or catch the vintage steam train across the river to the charming resort of Le Crotoy. Pack some binoculars and head to France's largest seal colony at nearby Le Hourdel or join a boat or kayak tour with a passionate local guide to see the seals up close.

Where to eat

Fresh seafood, beautifully cooked lamb reared on the salt marshes of the town, and Gateau Battu, a local brioche type cake, are just some of the delicious delicacies on offer. Many local restaurants serve specialities from the region including the mouthwatering Ficelle Picarde, a crêpe dish made with ham, mushrooms, and cream. Try Le Mathurin or Tables des Corderies for a true taste of the Somme Bay.
