NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort, an upper-upscale all-villa hideaway nestled on a pristine, palm-tree-blanketed island on the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, has unveiled new sustainability plans for 2024 ahead of World Earth Day on 22 April.

Since opening in 2023, the five-star island resort has already implemented several initiatives to support sustainability and reduce environmental impact. Many of these projects will be developed further in 2024, but new steps such as schemes to protect turtle nesting sites and plans for new solar water heaters mark a bold move towards a deepening commitment to sustainability in the years ahead.

The hotel's existing and future initiatives cover four key areas – environmental and animal conservation, energy efficiency, sustainable produce and waste management:

Environmental and animal conservation

In a new project for 2024, sea turtle nesting sites will be protected along the island's coastline. Sections of the sands known to be popular nesting areas will be cordoned off to conserve the turtle's habitats, helping to protect the endangered species. Meanwhile, guests will continue to have the opportunity to get involved with the resort's environmental conservation efforts, including its existing tree planting programme that helps to minimise carbon emissions.

Energy efficiency

Also new for 2024, the sun-kissed resort will implement solar water heaters, which will run alongside its existing eco-efficient heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. This, paired with the resort's LED lighting set-up, will significantly contribute to energy efficiency.

Sustainable produce

The resort's hydroponic garden – where plants are grown sustainably in piping, without the use of soil and using recycled water – and its zero-waste garden, which embraces ecological design and is plastic-free, organic and as animal-friendly as possible, will continue to grow throughout 2024, offering guests fresh produce cultivated on site.

Waste management

Existing sustainability-focused waste management schemes will also continue this year, including organic material and kitchen waste decomposition processes, which produce compost for use in the gardens and grounds of the resort as an organic fertiliser. Any excess compost is donated to the neighbouring community, further reinforcing the resort's commitment to the local environment. An on-site water bottling plant is also in place, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles and ensuring quality and sustainable drinking water for guests and staff.

NH Collection Maldives Havodda Resort offers 120 luxurious villas, all with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. The resort is on one of the closest Maldivian islands to the equator, promising almost 12 hours of daylight year-round, and provides guests with an experience of pure escapism in an exceptional setting encircled by a house reef teeming with marine life.

The resort boasts a dedicated Asian concept spa, a fully equipped gym, an inviting swimming pool, a kids club and a water sports and dive centre to facilitate countless aquatic activities. Delicious culinary options range from an all-day dining experience with international cuisine to a beachside grill, poolside pizzas and a cocktail bar with light bites.
