In the new, six-part series of Treasures of the World, historian Bettany Hughes explores places where a mosaic of cultures generates a dynamic history and where the past lives on in the present. Telling stories of extraordinary people who've changed the destiny of humankind and archaeological wonders which have shaped the story of the world. Presented in a cinematic journey showcasing the world's most stunning and significant historical sites.
In episode two of this third season of the show, Bettany explores Estonia, a country at the heart of world history from ancient times until the present day. She sails to the island of Saaremaa – Estonia's 'Viking Island'- and discovers a sacred burial site with evidence of human sacrifice.
In the capital Tallinn, she visits a research facility built to protect a giant medieval shipwreck with a cargo including perfectly preserved black rats, possibly carrying the Black Plague, an early European compass and leather shoes. At the Niguliste Church Museum, Bettany examines the magnificent medieval art including the 'Danse Macabre' - a 7.5m long painting depicting an emperor, empress, cardinal, and king dancing with death.
On the island of Kihnu, dubbed the last European matriarchy, she discovers why the UN has recently recognised it as an exemplar of the intangible heritage of humanity. Where motorbike-riding women have dedicated their lives to preserving the island's culture and unique folklore
Travelling inland to Soomaa, known as The Land of Bogs, she immerses herself in a landscape steeped in myth, legend and ancient crafts. At Narva on the border of Russia, Bettany explores Estonia's singing tradition and finds out how the power of song led to Estonia's independence in 1991.
