Reclaiming a Word with a Special Cultural Significance, Tribe
The name Tribe was chosen to signal community, unity, and Africa
It was selected at a time of tribal turbulence in Kenya and sought to reclaim the word to communicate strength, pride, loyalty, and belonging
Tribe was conceived from a simple belief that we co-exist on a single planet, and there is only one Tribe that matters… humankind
A Different and Empowering Approach to Hospitality and Service in Africa
From its inception, Tribe Hotel broke free of the existing colonial-style hotels and presents a space that supports the arts to better reflect the wealth and dignity of Africa and the Kenyan people
The attitude of service was transformed from a subservient approach to one that is more egalitarian and congenial, with guests being “hosted” rather than “served.”

Exceptional Design Marries New York Chic with an African Essence
Tribe Hotel was designed by architect Mehraz Ehsani, Shamim’s uncle, with stunning interiors by Les Harbottle, and conjures New York chic with an African essence
The design brief was to imagine a building abandoned by a very advanced ancient civilization that appreciated art and design
Its color palette is lush with sensuous shades of gold, black, white, cumin, cinnamon, sandstone and brown sugar
A World-Class Collection of African Art
The hotel and its rooms are accented by 900 pieces of original African art curated by Faranak Ehsani, Shamim’s mother, including rare bronze statues from Benin, clay and leather work from Cameroon, paintings by Kenyan artists, a wood carving by Expedito, a Ugandan artist and metal paneling.
