In the spirit of European Heritage Days, a time when monuments, museums and private mansions around Europe open their doors for visitors to share in their history, the MGallery Collection of Hotels is throwing open the doors of some of its most historic hotels globally, to encourage locals and visitors alike to discover their rich stories. Across the world throughout September, MGallery hotels are hosting a range of free and paid events from photography exhibitions to cooking classes and from historic tours to Heritage High Teas, with several properties participating across Australia and New Zealand.
“MGallery hotels are firmly rooted in the culture and history of their location and each one tells a unique story through its architecture, design, art, mixology and gastronomy,” said Mark Mewburn, Director of Marketing for the Pacific for Sofitel, MGallery, and Emblems Hotels. “MGallery Heritage Days will become an annual event to encourage people to peek behind the doors of these distinctive properties and share in their fascinating stories.”
The William Inglis Hotel at Warwick Farm Racecourse will host a Heritage High Tea on 22 September that pays homage to the horse racing history of the William Inglis & Son family. The event will feature a free tour of the five-star rural property, where guests will learn about Australia's leading bloodstock auctioneers and the notable champion horses to come from the stable, followed by a light tea of freshly baked scones, herbal teas, and pot-brewed coffee.
At The Porter House Hotel in Sydney, which was commissioned in 1876, you can enjoy a guided tour that highlights its long history and the colorful lives of the original owners, the Dixson family. Along the way, you will see some of the archaeological items uncovered during its renovation and discover the building's strong tradition for quality artisanship, having housed a tobacco factory, furniture maker and leather workshop. Taking in both the heritage wing and modernist wing, the tour will include a glass of sparkling wine and canapes and is free of charge. It takes place on Saturday 23 September.
At the Manly Pacific Hotel, a special photography exhibition is being held in the lobby, showcasing the vibrant and captivating photos of Manly local Murray Fraser. Through his lens, Murray captures the essence of Manly's identity as a meeting place and cherished playground for the community. Each photo tells a story, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the essence of the local heritage and surf culture that Manly is famous for. The exhibition is on display until Sunday 24 September. On Wednesday 20 September, Murray Fraser will also host an exclusive Sunrise Photoshoot and tour of Manly, where you can learn about the evolution of surf culture and discover the best photo spots around the hotel.
Across the Tasman, The Fable Hotel Auckland is hosting a Heritage High Tea that promises not only the finest flavours, but a nod to the stories woven into the hotel's Art Deco walls. Starting with a glass of champagne, you will be led on tour of the heritage building, which opened as Auckland's first skyscraper in 1928, and discover its various incarnations over the years including as a tea house and china shop. The history-laden tour finishes with a resplendent high tea featuring salmon tataki with soy and ginger glaze; lamb bon bons; lemon glazed scones; Coronation chicken sandwiches with dried apricot; striploin roast beef sandwiches with Gruyere cheese, watercress and horseradish mayonnaise; and a pretty selection of delicate pastries and sweet treats. Tickets are just $75 per person for this indulgent afternoon, taking place on 27 September.
