As the bustling streets of Rio de Janeiro prepare for the year's most flamboyant event, the design team at Andrew Henry Interiors has applied the vibrant spectrum of colours and patterns associated with the infamous carnival, into their new home trends. Influenced by the vibrant palettes and positivity of the Rio Festival, which takes place 17th- 25th February, this design aesthetic embraces the playful vibe, to create carnival inspired home style.
Introducing the carnival craze and how it can be weaved into the home, Paul Garland, Creative Manager at Andrew Henry Interiors comments: “Though not for the faint-hearted, this type of interior scheme is loud and proud, flamboyant and fun, and can be as inexpensive or lavish as you desire. Simple accessories such as cushions, artwork, styling items and plants can all be used to transport your imagination to an effervescent parade with dancers in glittering costumes, exotic birds flying high in the sky, set to the captivating beat of Samba.”
The first of the colour schemes is influenced by the vibrancy of the celebration, softened with natural eco-shades. Harlequin has the optimum wallpaper to enhance any carnival mood with its contemporary collection, Colour 3, which exudes boldness, confidence and a sense of fun; a narrative directly associated with this exotic fiesta.
Paul continues: “Consider the statement wallpaper Journey of Discovery, which showcases festival associations with its bright, bold colours and show-stopping wow factor. The wallpaper comprises wide-ranging shades of greens, blues, yellows and pinks, telling a fascinating story of culture and tradition. A design of this calibre stands on its own legs, but if this is too overwhelming for your home, try taking one or two of these tones and patterns and implementing them in slightly subtler ways. Radiant cushions, imaginative artwork depicting an extravagant story and interesting styling items such as books, candles and trinkets from around the world will assist in creating the desired look.”
The second colour wheel takes Pantone's colour of the year, Viva Magenta, and incorporates this striking, sensual shade to pack a powerful punch. On how to incorporate this colour into your carnival-inspired home, Paul comments: “This shade's endless versatility has been widely spoken about amongst the interior design industry, not least for its ability to draw the eye to certain points of a room. With such a rich and hard-hitting tone, Viva Magenta can be used minimally, but with a maximalist impact.”
Combining such a bright shade with other carnival references, such as lamps incorporating feathers, fringed-cushions in clashing colours and oversized mirrors, can transform a room into a memorable oasis. Other simple additions like vivid bedspreads, soft rugs and abstract vases expressing Viva Magenta are eye-catching and evoke feelings of happiness and excitement, bringing carnival positivity and optimism into your space.
The third carnival colourway suggested by Andrew Henry Interiors is inspired by long summer days and warm evenings. Superbloom is a vivid combination of peach pink, fiesta red and daylily orange creating a juicy palette, oozing the flavour of ready to devour, sweet fruit. With such varied colour pigments, injecting Superbloom into your home can take many forms, from canvases illustrating artistic interpretations of tropical flora and fauna through to furniture placed in an alfresco-style layout to emphasise socialising.
Paul explains: “This sun-loving palette elicits a sense of delight, reminiscent of joyful days spent by the poolside in Palm Springs or on an energetic street with the South American sun beating down. Brighter shades are softened with mellow yellow and peach, whilst a dash of eggshell blue and Fiji flower pink cools off the hot summer hues.”
Wavy, bright, playful, spirited and perhaps even wacky, the carnival interior theme is as inclusive as the world-renowned celebration itself. Paul concludes: “There is something for everyone, including those looking for subtle hints of vibrancy or on the other end of the scale, a scheme entirely embracing carnival on every level. The colours, inspired by spring and summer trends, all conjure positivity and allow the home to be a welcoming, fun and creative space for all to enjoy.”
