The Sarojin Wins Best Hotel at Responsible Thailand Awards

The Sarojin

The Sarojin, Thailand's 56-room independent boutique residence, has been voted the country's Best Hotel at the Responsible Thailand Awards, which were announced Monday at the World Travel Market exhibition at the ExCel Centre in London. The prestigious Responsible Thailand Awards are run by Tourism Authority of Thailand in association with Wanderlust Travel magazine.

Nominated by readers of Wanderlust magazine and the UK travel trade, the awards celebrate Thailand-based organisations and resorts that are most deserving of recognition for their green initiatives and tireless efforts to promote sustainable tourism. The Responsible Thailand Awards 2022, which received 1,602 nominations, were announced Monday at a Press Conference held at the World Travel Market and were presented by His Excellency Mr. Phiphat Ratchakitprakharn, the Minister of Tourism and Sports. The judging panel was made up of Lyn Hughes, Founding Editor of Wanderlust magazine; Derek Moore, Chairman of AITO; Martin Symington, Travel Writer and Author; and Mark Stratton, Travel Writer and Broadcaster.

The Sarojin, which has been recognised and awarded many times for its commitment to sustainability and support of the community, submitted a strong entry which showcased its energy-conserving, sustainable water and waste reduction initiatives, such as the introduction of a bottling plant in 2019, which has enabled the resort to completely eliminate its use of plastic bottles in 2022. However, the judging panel were particularly impressed with the 'One Booking One Tree' initiative that the resort launched earlier this year. The Sarojin has been supporting and contributing to the Mangrove Forest Planting Project in Baan Nam Kem (established by local fishermen following the tragedy of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami) since 2007 with monthly planting days organised by the staff.  However, with 'One Booking One Tree' the resort boosts its commitment further by being able to plant more trees and support even more initiatives.

Commenting on the latest award win, The Sarojin's owner, Kate Kemp, said: “We are thrilled that The Sarojin has been recognised once again at the Responsible Thailand Awards for our conservation efforts and for our contribution to growing Thailand as a sustainable destination. The Sarojin consistently looks for ways to further improve its green initiatives without compromising guest experiences and comfort. We truly believe that the travel industry has a strong responsibility to be as sustainable as possible and strives to do our utmost to minimise our own impact.”

With community engagement and sustainability at the heart of The Sarojin and at the core of its ethos, this latest award recognises how The Sarojin remains true to its local surroundings, stays committed to minimising the impact its guests have on the environment and ensures that the local community benefits from its operations and support. The boutique residence has earned itself an outstanding reputation for supporting community projects and the recently introduced projects support other ongoing initiatives such as The Sarojin Cares Days, which see staff and guests that wish to volunteer help the community to support an array of well-deserving projects and The Sarojin Khao Lak Community Fund, a community fund directing and administering funds to various elements of Khao Lak's recovery.

The Sarojin has been recognised for its fine dining offering by The MICHELIN Guide Bangkok, Phuket, and Phang-nga 2021. The highly-regarded restaurant guide honours those that consistently provide diners with high quality products, a 'mastery of flavour and cooking techniques' and value for money, as well as demonstrating the chef's personality within the cuisine.

The Sarojin has been voted consistently in Conde Nast Traveller's Top Resorts in Thailand: Readers' Choice Awards 2013-2022

The Sarojin Community Care Fund

Established in December 2004 The Sarojin Community Care Fund, which was initially set up to help rebuild the communities surrounding our resort in the wake of the devastating 26 December tsunami, continues to contribute to a number of worthy local projects in Khao Lak. From providing medical provision for prosthetic limbs and supporting local orphanages with childcare, to building school classrooms, roads and covering the cost of a full-time veterinary surgeon to care for the local wildlife, there's such a huge variety of ways our fund gives back to those closest to us. Guests are encouraged to donate to the fund during their stay, with 100% of the money raised distributed to local community projects.
