Cheers To Aruba's Top Tipples

Aruba Tourism Authority

Glasses are being raised to a new entry to the already enticing bar lists around the thirst-quenching establishments of holiday island Aruba.

Holidays are always a time to enjoy one of those colourful tempting cocktails and bar staff in this Dutch Caribbean island are masters at concoctions from margaritas to daiquiris.

But for those whose tastes are a littler simpler, there is a welcome addition to the menu with a new brew, Magic Mango, rising up the popularity charts.

This fruit-driven, speciality beer has been shown to be helping build market share for Aruba national brewery, Balashi. With fierce competition from international brands imported to the island, Balashi has topped the charts with its Chill beer label, officially named the top-selling. Chill, a crisp and refreshing 'beach beer' tops the list of beers sold island-wide.

Locals and visitors certainly have no shortage of beer to choose from in Aruba, with dozens of brands importing beer varieties to the island, including most of the world's top-sellers.

The overall increase in demand for Balashi Brewery beer brands— including the addition of Magic Orange to the Magic portfolio launched earlier this year— has prompted an investment in brewing infrastructure, expanding capacity by 35 per cent by year's end.

Meanwhile, for those whose tipple is a little more colourful and commands more ingredients, Aruba's mixologists are ready and waiting.

They are also in tune with the seasons and events – like L. G. Smiths Steak and Chop House, which is chilling customers with three Halloween-themed cocktails. This popular spot on the main coastal road leaving island capital Oranjestad, is mixing up a Bloody Rita, combining pomegranate juice and tequilla; a Disaronno-based Spooky Sour- 'Let terror be turned into a treat'; or a Dark Knight, with Diplomatico rum as its main ingredient and billed as 'wicked through and through'.

One of the most popular cocktail spots is the funky BLUE Bar in the lobby of the Renaissance Marina Hotel, said to be one of the key social centres of the island. Its sleek, modern look and pool-side location is excellent for cooling down with a perfectly poured cocktail midday, and heating up the night on the dance floor.

Back outside and overlooking the sea, try Surfside Beach Bar, again on the main coastal road, between the airport and Oranjestad. This welcomes guests with happy hours between 12pm and 1pm and 5 and 6pm, when there are half-price drinks, including beers, all wines by the glass and cocktails including Sex on the Beach, Aruba Ariba and margaritas.
