As 'Earth Day' on Friday 22nd April approaches, the team at Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa on Silhouette Island reflect on its year-round environmental and conservation practices which means every day is Earth Day at the Resort as strident measures are taken to protect the island's ecosystem. Over the centuries pirates, plantation workers and, now, visiting guests have called Silhouette home, but nature has always been the headline act. Giving nature a helping hand is a top priority for the Resort.
Hilton hotels around the world are prioritising sustainability at the forefront of their operations as part of Hilton's Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, Travel with Purpose, to drive responsible travel and tourism globally. Located on the island of Silhouette, Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resorts & Spa, is encircled by the largest National Marine Park in the Seychelles. A dazzling array of fish, hard and soft corals, along with other marine animals (including a significant Hawksbill nesting population and Giant Tortoises) abound in this protected area and the team at Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa are passionate about protecting this unique environment as well as educating guests about how they can help with the preservation of this marine ecosystem.
Beach and lagoon clean-up activities and Sustainability Days are held regularly, and further offshore, with assistance from Labriz Dive Center reef and sea cleans allow for guests to explore the wonders of the undersea world at Silhouette as well as keep it clear of debris.
Back on land, Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resorts & Spa continues to work towards becoming a sustainably conscious resort, and over 90% of the island itself is a protected nature reserve. The resort's state-of-the-art water filtration system harvests water from the Mount Dauban waterfall and fills reusable glass bottles for use across Silhouette and Mahé. To date this scheme has saved over 292,000 plastic bottles. Guests also receive a reusable stainless-steel bottle when they check-in. The resorts organic, pesticide-free garden (which has reduced the resort's energy and water consumption levels by 20 per cent to date) along with solar-powered panels being fitted to buggies, solar-powered water heaters in villas, hydro power for lighting, a new wind turbine, occupancy sensors for lighting and air conditioning, food waste composting, LED lights, and reduced water flow rates in shower heads and basin; are just a few of the actions that the resort has taken to date.
Continuously implementing new eco-friendly policies, the resort currently works with the Island Conservation Society on a variety of sustainable projects, including forestry care, marine conservation and maintenance, as well as protecting the endangered Seychelles Seat-tailed bat, which, which live on Silhouette. This year also saw the opening of a new sanctuary for their population of Aldabra giant tortoises. With 10 juvenile giant tortoises currently residing at the resort, their new home offers the growing titans more space with over 600 sqm, a pool, and elements of the natural environment they would find across Silhouette Island. The open-air area allows the tortoises to roam while also allowing guests a chance to see these rare animals like never before, in a habitat that mirrors their natural one while being safely protected until they are ready to be released.
Andre Borg, General Manager at Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa, outlined the resort's environmental policy as:
'Our vision is to develop Hilton Seychelles Labriz and Silhouette Island as a leader of Sustainable Tourism and maintain our cultural heritage in an eco-friendly environment. We are committed to continually strive to minimize the amount of waste we generate and energy we consume, as well as preserve the stunning natural beauty and diversity of the marine park that surround us and the oceans beyond.'
