As the Queen prepares to mark the official date of her Platinum Jubilee on 6 February, tailor-made specialist Audley Travel suggests a selection of trips to Commonwealth countries that have hosted the Queen either on her Coronation and Jubilee tours, or at a poignant moment in royal history.
Kenya (where the Princess became the Queen - 1952)
Audley's Kenya Safari and Zanzibar Beach itinerary takes clients to Laikipia for views of Mount Kenya, similar to those that the then Princess Elizabeth enjoyed before receiving the sad news of her father's death.
Audley's clients stay for three nights at Kicheche Laikipia, a small luxury property near Mount Kenya with spacious tents by a waterhole popular with birdlife, buffalo and plains game. Meals are served communally around a big table, and guests enjoy day and night game drives, bush walks and other activities including lion tracking by vehicle and visiting the endangered species enclosure.
The 15-day itinerary costs from £5,960 per person (based on two sharing) and includes flights, transfers, safari activities, park fees and accommodation on a fully inclusive basis on safari and B&B on Zanzibar. www.audleytravel.com/kenya / 01993 838510
New Zealand (Coronation tour – 1953/4, Silver Jubilee tour - 1977 and Golden Jubilee tour - 2002)
Huka Lodge is close to the famous Huka Falls near Taupo on New Zealand's North Island and has hosted the Queen on several of her visits to the country. The property is set in 17 acres of grounds, with 20 secluded suites. Guests can either relax and enjoy their surroundings or try activities including world-class trout fishing, golf, skiing and white-water rafting.
Huka Lodge serves guests meals made with local produce complemented by fine wines in dining locations around the property.
Audley can include Huka Lodge on its 32-day Classic New Zealand self-drive tour, which costs from £11,980 per person (based on two sharing) and includes flights, accommodation on a B&B basis, car hire and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/new-zealand / 01993 838820.
Uganda (Coronation tour - 1954)
Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda was founded in 1952 as Kazinga National Park and renamed to mark the visit by the Queen in 1954.
Audley's clients visiting the park have the chance to see four of the big five (there are no rhinos), hyena, hippo and several antelope species as well as tree climbing lion and chimpanzees. Audley recommends taking a trip to the Kyambura Gorge, in the far east of the park, to track the 20 resident chimpanzees on foot.
Audley designed a Highlights of Uganda itinerary to mark its 25th anniversary last year, and this celebratory trip includes two nights in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The 14-day trip costs from £8,300 per person (based on two travelling) and includes flights, transfers, safari activities, park fees, gorilla and chimp trekking permits and accommodation on a fully inclusive basis on safari and a B&B basis elsewhere. www.audleytravel.com/uganda / 01993 838575
Canada (Golden Jubilee tour – 2002)
Audley's Grand western Canada self-drive tour visits two of the locations on the route of the Queen's Golden Jubilee tour – Vancouver and Victoria.
In Vancouver clients spend time exploring the city as well as taking a thrilling seaplane flight over the Gulf Islands to Bowen Island for sunset views and dinner. In Victoria clients take a three-hour whale watching trip.
This 22-day itinerary costs from £6,800 per person (based on two sharing) and includes flights, a fully insured rental car, accommodation and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/canada / 01993 838700.
