Adventure Resort Offers Multiple Options for Aerial Activities

Adventures on the Gorge

FAYETTEVILLE, W. Va.,  – Aerial adventures at Southern West Virginia's Adventures on the Gorge (AOTG) are pure high-flying fun, and variety makes them even better.

AOTG offers an impressive selection with two zipline tours, a seven-level ropes course, some of the best rock climbing in the country and a guided walk the length of the famous New River Gorge Bridge from the unusual perspective 25 feet below the bridge deck.

“Why should the famous birds of the New River Gorge have all the fun?” asked Roger Wilson, CEO of Adventures on the Gorge. “With the security of harnesses and other equipment and the careful instruction of our fun-loving guides, we give our guests the wings they need for exhilarating and unforgettable adventures in the air.”

AOTG is located on the rim of the country's newest national park, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The gorge features stunning views and is home to some of the best whitewater rafting in the world.

The aerial adventures help to offer experiences for multiple generations.

“I always get a kick out of watching the faces of kids when they see their parents and grandparents take on activities like ziplining or rock climbing,” said Wilson. “This often pushes everyone a little out of their comfort zones while bringing them closer together.”

Here's the rundown of aerials at AOTG:

With a minimum age of four, TimberTrek Aerial Adventure Park features seven increasingly challenging courses with 60 platforms as well as crazy obstacles such as climbable cargo nets, barrels, ladders, bridges and ziplines. Harnessed-in guests proceed at their own pace from obstacle to obstacle and advance from course to course while enthusiastic guides on the ground provide encouragement. At night, the resort lights up the course and calls it Moontrek.

TreeTops Canopy Tour features 10 ziplines and five sky bridges. Adventurers 10 and up glide through an ancient Eastern Hemlock forest and land on platforms that have been installed so they do not damage the trees. Sustainability is a key focus of the course, as a portion of the fees help protect the regal trees from the invasive Wooly Adelgid, an insect that eventually will kill the trees if left untreated.

Rock Climbing and Rappelling in the New River Gorge features numerous cliffside climbing routes for beginners and experienced climbers alike. AOTG guides provide gear and instructions on two-hour evening, half- and full-day tours. Minimum age is eight.

Gravity Ziplines offers 1½ miles of lines, including the 3,100-foot Adrena-Line. With a minimum age of 12, Gravity is a seasonal operation that opens in the spring when the conditions are mild. Guests travel up to 50 miles per hour above the tree line for the first zips, and the experience culminates with a dual-racing zipline where guests can travel up to 60 miles per hour.

The BridgeWalk features a 3,000-foot-long catwalk 25 feet under the deck of the New River Gorge Bridge with heights topping out at 852 feet. While traversing the longest steel arch bridge in North America and the most photographed site in West Virginia, visitors can learn about the structural design and take in the views of the river below. Minimum age is 10.
