BASS LAKE, CA (JULY 29, 2021) – Attention filmmakers and visual storytellers. Seventeen miles south of the Highway 41 entrance to Yosemite National Park and 55 miles north of Fresno, Bass Lake offers a rustic escape within driving distance of California's most fantastic attractions. The Pines Resort and Ducey's on the Lake, in collaboration with the Yosemite / Madera County Film Commission, welcome all local and national filmmakers to bring productions to Bass Lake
In addition to a host of lodging options like Lakeview suites, chalets, and vacation rental homes available from The Pines Resort, other amenities include; lakefront access, outdoor patios, weddings ceremony and banquet space, two restaurants, a swimming pool, and close proximity to hiking and mountain biking trails.
The 3,400-foot elevation of Bass Lake attracts Hollywood film crews to the scenic high country lake year-round. It's so photogenic that USA Today named it one of the "Top 10 Places To Lodge Yourself in a Movie." Vast expanses of rolling pastures and oak trees depict the foothills, while the forests, lakes, waterfalls, and streams all reveal the majestic beauty of the High Sierra.
Located in central California, Madera County is four hours and 30-minutes north of Los Angeles and three hours east of San Francisco. The county has many scenic and historic locations for filming, including the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, Sierra National Forest, Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, San Joaquin River Gorge, cities of Madera and Chowchilla, historic landmarks like Fresno Flats and Bandit Town, and Native American Indian sites.
Bass Lake is the setting for several well-known feature films. Hollywood immortalized the beauty of the lake in Carnival Boat (1932), Leave Her to Heaven (1945), Hiawatha (1952), Meatballs 4 (1992), Mouse Hunt (1997), The Giant of Thunder Mountain (1991). And the cult classic The Great Outdoors (1988), starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy. The film was written and produced by John Hughes, the man behind 80s classics like Sixteen Candles (1984), The Breakfast Club (1985), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). The Great Outdoors was filmed on location at The Pines Resort for six weeks in October of 1987.
“It does not matter what time of year, the incredible scenery at the lake impresses daily,” explains Mark Choe, The Pines Resort General Manager. “The trees, the water, and the golden hour lighting is the perfect backdrop for outdoor stories, but it's more than that. There is a nostalgic feeling that our particular resort has in the hearts of so many. I mean, who can forget the scene of John Candy inThe Great Outdoors trying to finish the ol'96er. Joking aside, the setting at our resort is comfortable, self-contained, and a lot of fun. I'd like to see more movie magic created here in the future.”
Bass Lake is featured as a backdrop in numerous automotive commercials for Cadillac, Honda, Chrysler, and Isuzu. Additionally, Mark Harmon produced two Coors beer commercials in the region.
The Pines Resort itself has been under the spotlight recently. The streaming service, OnDemandKorea, considered the Korean Netflix, produced one episode of the series "Against The Odds—CEO" telling the story of the Choe family and their journey in becoming the current owners of the picturesque lakeside resort. Local news television stations like ABC 30, the front page of The Fresno Bee newspaper, and national publications like Yahoo! Finance, MarketWatch, and The Associated Press all echoed the documentary's success.
Find comfortable, convenient lodging at The Pines Resort while utilizing the surrounding environment for your project, or consider using the facilities as the setting. Whether the goal is shooting for a feature film, short film, music video, commercial, or photoshoot, the priority is to accommodate requests and ensure productions run adequately. Along with concept approval and satisfactory budget accommodations for both parties, the goal is to realize visions for the world to see.
