Modern Asian restaurant Miss Mi launches in Melbourne's new Mövenpick Hotel

After its opening was delayed due to ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns, on the 18th November 2021, modern Asian restaurant, Miss Mi finally opens for business.

Located on the corner of Spencer and Bourke streets in Melbourne CBD, Miss Mi's menu is an intoxicating mix of dishes influenced by the cultures, cuisines and aromatics of Asia.

At its spearhead is Borneo-Born Head Chef, Esca Khoo.

Paying tribute to his mothers cooking and a youth spent working in the hawker restaurants of his hometown, Khoo's menu honours modern and traditional Asian techniques, ingredients and flavours. Reimagining classic dishes from the continent, Khoo's menu evokes memories of travels to Asia, whilst using home-made sauces, sambals and pickles to connect diners with his childhood in Borneo.

Meanwhile, the inclusion of uniquely Australian produce draws on Khoo's commitment to local, sustainable food practises and his 15 years' experience in kitchens across Melbourne including Noma Australia, Dinner by Heston, Longrain and most recently, Lûmé.

For diners, Miss Mi is a destination to reunite with traditional Asian favourites and discover exotic regional specialties. Here, market fish Hinava with starfruit, roe, finger limes and savoury coconut appears alongside plates of Wagyu short rib with Rendang, pineapple rojak and coriander, and skewers of kangaroo satay.

“Showcasing the unique ingredients, dishes and complex flavours of Asia is at the heart of the Miss Mi philosophy. We want to evoke memories of your trips to Asia. We make all our sauces, spices, curries, and sambals in-house. We pair them with the best produce from local suppliers to bring the bold, vibrant dishes that I grew up with, to Melbourne diners,” said Khoo.

Designed by global architecture powerhouse Grey Matters, the Miss Mi venue is a vibrant array of eclectic artwork, patterns, textures, and materials that give life to the space.

An open kitchen emits enticing aromas of smoke and spice whilst a feminine and flamboyant mural created by renowned local artist Steve Cross commands attention throughout the interior. Inspired by traditional Chinese operatic performances, the mural connects guests throughout the various interior spaces.

Miss Mi's Bar, a central focal point of the restaurant, features white stone counters and expansive windows providing views to the dynamic Melbourne streetscape beyond. Offering curated cocktails that depict travel tales to the Asian Continent, it's a stylish and comfortable space to start – or end – the evening.

Immediately adjacent to Southern Cross Station, Miss Mi is open for dinner Thursday to Saturday. For the initial launch period, the chef has created a set menu to take guests on a Journey through Asia, featuring a selection of our favourite dishes and seasonal specials. A La carte options will be available as Covid-19 restrictions ease.  Bookings available via the website, www.missmimelbourne.com.au
