This 2021, the Catalonia-Catalan Tourist Board is excited to launch a new touring product: the Grand Tour of Catalonia. A circular route that wants to help travellers discover Catalonia’s essence at their own pace; and that connects the cultural heritage, natural landscapes, urban environments, and food and wine pleasures that define this land’s personality.
Either through a coach or with their own vehicle, each traveller will be able to discover the scenic roads of Catalonia, adapting the trip to their needs and interests, and choosing between a big array of experiences. From discovering the works of Gaudí and Dalí; tasting pa amb tomàquet and Michelin-starred meals; visiting rural villages or vibrant cities like Barcelona; experiencing adrenaline rush activities like sky gliding in Terres de Lleida; or even enjoying peaceful walks along isolated shorelines.
This new itinerary includes many destinations in Catalonia. To help the traveller discover them, the tour presents 5 different sections divided into 5-7 stages each. They can be discovered either in a single tour of 13 days or separately at the travellers own pace. The main highlights of each section are:
- Section 1: Vineyards with a taste of the sea (Barcelona – Tarragona). From the vibrant city of Barcelona to the old Roman Tarraco in Tarragona, this section takes the traveller to discover landmarks like the mountains of Montserrat, Cardona and its castle, the historical heritage of Solsona, the charm of Sitges, as well as the Penedès landscapes of vineyards and wineries.
- Section 2: In search of History (Tarragona – Lleida). This section follows along the coast of Costa Daurada, between ancient olive trees and vineyards, passes through the natural beauty of the Delta de l’Ebre and explores the wine landscapes of Terra Alta and Priorat before reaching the town of Lleida.
- Section 3: Very close to the heavens (Lleida – La Seu d’Urgell). From the iconic Seu Vella of Lleida, this section drives the traveller to the Catalan Pyrenees to discover among others: the medieval villages of the Val d’Aran, the Romanesque churches in Vall de Boí, the National Park of Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici, etc.
- Section 4: Ode to nature (La Seu d’Urgell – Figueres). From the medieval charm of La Seu d’Urgell, the route heads east along the Cadí Moixeró Natural Park, passing by the Monastery of Ripoll, the Volcanic Area of La Garrotxa Natural Park, until reaching Figueres, the universe of Dalí.
- Section 5: From Surrealism to Modernism (Figueres – Barcelona). This last section continues to Cadaqués and Cap de Creus along the Costa Brava. Travellers will venture to fishing ports such as in Palamós, medieval villages like Peratallada, the Montseny Natural Park, before making a stop at the family beaches of Costa Barcelona.
Sustainable and responsible tourism is at the core of this product. Its’ main goal is to boost the discovery of local life and products while encouraging respect for the environment and culture of the territory. The tour can be enjoyed all year round and throughout the whole Catalan territory, thus seeking to reverse the effects of seasonality and massification tourism. Furthermore, by checking its website and app, this product adapts to the travellers’ needs and wishes considering how many days they have, what their interests are, and the sections they want to do.
