Power up mountain passes in Italy's Dolomites, tackle Bolivia's infamous Death Road or go island-hopping in Japan: Ride takes you around the world in search of adventure on two wheels. Covering 100 cycling routes, this inspirational book will make you reach for your handlebars, whether you're an experienced, ascent-loving road cyclist or are planning your first bikepacking trip.

Exploring the world by bike is pure freedom. Nothing beats the feeling of jumping in the saddle and heading off to discover diverse landscapes and new cultures, all completely under your own steam. That's why we've created Ride. The rides featured in this book have been selected by our expert writers (including intrepid bikepackers and talented bike racers) and enthusiastically selected and compiled by our own cycling-mad team.

Awe-inspiring images and compelling descriptions of each ride will have you ready to go, while handy maps, elevation profiles and practical information – including things like distance, difficulty and road surface – will help you plan the nitty gritty of your trip.

We've also included the best places to explore along the way – whether that's refuelling spots, epic viewpoints or nearby must-see sights – as well as suggestions for alternative ways to tackle a route. Ride is also jam-packed with facts and figures on the world's most famous cyclists and iconic races, plus information on the history of cycling, how to choose a bike and what kit to take.

Notable contributors to Ride include:

  • Cass Gilbert – Cass has over 20 years of bicycle touring under his belt, during which time he's traversed the length of Asia and the Middle East on two wheels, bikepacked his way around the American South West, and ridden dirt roads from Alaska to Patagonia. More recently, he's helped develop the Trans Ecuador Mountain Bike Route @whileoutriding
  • Jenny Tough – Adventurer, writer and film-maker, who has participated in several ultra-distance unsupported bikepacking races @jennytough
  • Oli Broom – Cycled to Australia to watch the Ashes cricket series in 2009, which inspired his book Cycling to the Ashes: A Cricketing Odyssey from London to Brisbane. Now runs The Slow Cyclist tour company. @slow_cyclist
  • Lee Craigie – A former professional mountain bike racer and director of the Adventure Syndicate, she is the Active Nation Commissioner for Scotland and official representative of walking, cycling and physical activity across the nation. @leecraigie_
