Luxury Family Hotels is launching two new Wind in the Willows inspired Afternoon Teas for guests to enjoy this spring and summer.
As they reopen their doors on 17 May (in line with Government guidelines), all five hotels in the Luxury Family Hotels collection will offer the teas - one especially designed for adults and the other tailored for children.
Luxury Family Hotels' Afternoon Tea theme for this summer has been inspired by Kenneth Grahame's children's classic, Wind in the Willows, and features some of the favourite food of the famous characters including Mr Toad, Badger, Ratty and Mole.
The Wind in the Willows Afternoon Tea adult menu includes a selection of finger sandwiches as well as delights including a truffled cheddar and ham scotch egg with pickles, freshly made savoury and sweet scones, and a number of desserts including Ratty's lemonade posset and Badger's chocolate and berry swiss roll.
The children's tea includes a selection of sandwiches and crudités, 'Toad in the Hall' Sausage Tartlet, and a special creation to delight little guests: Mole's boiled egg and soldiers…..with a twist. Served in an egg shell, the 'boiled egg' has been culinary reimagined by Luxury Family Hotels chef team. Instead of egg white, children will be served a mascarpone whipped mousse with the egg's yolk being replaced by a mouth-watering mango gel! No boiled eggs would be served without soldiers and, for an indulgent twist, children will be able to enjoy a chocolate pastry finger which can be dipped in for a total sensory and taste sensation. Squeals of delight and laughter are expected all round!
Simon Maguire, Managing Director for Luxury Family Hotels, says, “Following the resounding success of our Beatrix Potter inspired Edible Garden Afternoon Tea last year, we decided to look closer to home for inspiration and we didn't have to go far as we turned to the children's classic Wind in the Willows. It was a natural fit given Fowey Hall, our hotel located in Cornwall, was thought to be the inspiration behind Toad's majestic residence, Toad Hall.
“We know how popular Afternoon Tea is for guests of all ages and we're looking forward to serving it to our hotel guests and non-residents this spring and summer as I'm sure they are ready to be treated after spending so much time cooking at home.”
Luxury Family Hotels' Fowey Hall provided inspiration for Toad Hall
The pretty sailing town of Fowey on the south Cornish coast provided inspiration to The Wind in the Willows author Kenneth Grahame, while he was writing.
Grahame first came to Fowey in 1899, staying at the Fowey Hotel while convalescing from pneumonia. Here he became friends with Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (Q), who introduced him to life in Fowey, he also married Elspeth Thompson in St Fimbarrus Church in Fowey in the same year. Although the marriage was a somewhat unhappy one, Grahame often sought refuge in Fowey spending much time with Q and on the river. It was during these visits that he wrote to Alastair, his only son (affectionally known as Mouse) with his tales of the riverbank. These letters and other bedtime stories were to make up The Wind in the Willows.
