8 February 2021 – Intrepid Urban Adventures, the day tour arm of global tour operator Intrepid Travel, has launched online virtual experiences to give families a taste of travel during the pandemic.
These live and interactive tours – launched in time for the half term holiday - connect families with local tour guides and their families around the globe.
At a time when we are all missing human connection, children will have the opportunity to interact with kids in other countries, ask questions about their lives and learn about the local culture and traditions.
All tours are hands-on and offer families the chance to learn something new. Highlights include cooking pierogi with a family in Krakow, baking Anzac biscuits with a Melbourne mum, and creating a watercolour masterpiece inspired by the works of Frida Kahlo.
The new family tours are part of the wider Urban Adventures At Home range of online experiences, designed to support local guides whose livelihoods have been impacted by the pandemic.
As of February 2021, Intrepid Urban Adventures guides have led over 5,000 virtual experiences globally. With the launch of family experiences, Intrepid now offers over 50 online experiences, proving that virtual tours are a new reality.
The family collection currently includes experiences from Melbourne, Krakow, Mexico City and Hanoi, with plans to expand to other destinations in the coming months. Sample classes include:
- Frida Kahlo Watercolor Painting Class (£22 for 1 hour)
Learn about Mexican pop art and create a watercolor masterpiece inspired by the works of Frida Kahlo. With the guidance of a local artist in Mexico City, you’ll paint your own work of art by following simple steps and using materials that are easy to find online or in any art store. As you paint, you’ll learn about Frida's life as an artist and worldwide feminist icon.
- Fruit Pierogi Cooking Class from Krakow (£26 for 2 hours)
Learn how to make pierogi from scratch and cook them in a fun, safe and child-friendly way. Your kids will get to play the role of authentic chefs as they prepare handmade pasta and a tasty (and healthy!) fruit filling. They will make the dough, roll it out, mix the filling, cook the pierogi and decorate their plates. They will also try different flavours and play with various textures and shapes. They’ll even get to learn and practice some Polish!
- Bake Anzac Biscuits with a Melbourne Family (£18 for 1 hour)
Looking for a fun family activity? Learn how to make Anzac biscuits, a sweet biscuit from Australia, in the comfort of your own home! In this hands-on virtual baking class, you will get to make and eat your own traditional Australian biscuits while hearing about the history and significance of Anzac Day. Discover a fun game people play on this special day, ideas for easy craft activities and listen to a wonderful children’s story book.
All tours are hosted over Zoom and are open to children aged over six. Prices start from £18 per family.
