Travelzoo® (NASDAQ: TZOO), a global Internet media company that publishes exclusive offers and experiences for members today released the results of its latest UK survey – The 2021 Domestic Travel Outlook, during a live webinar event.
Travelzoo's Head of UK Hotel Sales, Nick Hurley, shared insights from Travelzoo members who responded to a survey about their travel plans. The survey was completed in the limited period where UK travellers were able to consider travel between the November lockdown and preceding the Tier 4 announcements for most of the country. Vaccine-inspired confidence was also a topic of many news reports at the time.
The live event also featured a panel moderated by James Stagg, Editor of The Caterer. The panel experts were Nikola Reid of Deloitte LLP, Martin Evans of The Tourism Business, and Gail Peters of Almarose Hotels and Resorts.
Key insights from the 2021 Domestic Travel Outlook data include:
- 47% will take three or more breaks in the UK in 2021, 42% will take one to two UK breaks
- UK breaks are becoming longer: while last year more people were taking 2-night breaks, 30% plan to take breaks for three nights and one in five say they will take a week
- 84% will spend money on additional services in the hotel, of these 85% said they would buy meals at the restaurant
- Off-peak travel is important to Travelzoo members, bringing opportunity for hotels who are mainly busy during the peak season
- 38% prefer country hotels, while 44% have no preference on the type of hotel they will book — so they can be swayed by a compelling offer
- Top spots for 2021 travel include The Lake District, London, the South West, and Scotland. London is at number two overall, a surprising indication that Brits are seeing it as a longer-stay tourism destination for 2021
- 80% would travel in the UK (when restrictions allow) without a vaccine, but over half would NOT travel long-haul without it
- Refundable and flexible deals are key. With 43% saying the ability to refund their booking is the most important thing when considering travel
