A Brand-New After-Dark Illuminated Trail at Gibside

My Christmas Trails

For the very first time, the eighteenth century Georgian splendour of the gardens at the National Trust's Gibside will light up with a new after-dark, family friendly experience.

The National Trust Gibside offers more than 600 acres of woodland and countryside, complete with a tree-lined avenue, Neo-classical Chapel and orangery sitting amongst the designed landscape.

As twilight falls the magic begins.  Expect the unexpected with fairies dancing in the trees, fiery fish and woodland wildlife sculpted in willow as you stroll beside the Grand Avenue into an enchanting landscape filled with wonder.

Lit by lanterns, wander between flickering flames and beside stately majestic trees from one amazing space to another.

Within this fiery interpretation of stars and spheres, illuminated flora and fantasy, there are moments of reflection and playful discovery set to a soundscape that will inspire and intrigue.

The hour-long discovery trail has been specially designed for visitors of all ages to enjoy. The Great Outdoors made magical.

About Gibside

A rare example of an eighteenth-century landscape garden, Gibside was created with spectacular views in mind. The vision of coal magnate George Bowes and once a pleasure ground for the Georgian elite, Gibside can now be enjoyed by everyone.

A tree-lined avenue, Palladian Chapel and orangery sit among pockets of peaceful woodland. The grand ruin of Gibside Hall offers a glimpse into the dramatic story of heiress Mary Eleanor Bowes.

Here, you can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life within 243 hectares (600 acres) of gardens, woodland and countryside – perfect for getting back to nature and spotting wildlife including otters and red kites.

About the National Trust

The National Trust is a conservation charity founded in 1895 by three people, Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley who saw the importance of the nation's heritage and open spaces, and wanted to preserve them for everyone to enjoy.

This year, the charity celebrates its 125th anniversary, and these values are still at the heart of everything it does.

To help mark this significant moment in its history, the Trust has committed to achieving carbon net zero emissions by 2030, and establishing 20 million trees to help tackle climate change, creating green corridors for people and nature near towns and cities, running a year-long campaign to connect people with nature and continuing investment in arts and heritage.

Ensuring everyone who visits feels welcome, and more people can access its places continues to be another key aspect of the charity's work.

Entirely independent of Government, the National Trust looks after more than 250,000 hectares of countryside, 780 miles of coastline and hundreds of special places across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The National Trust receives more than 26.9 million visits each year to the places it cares for that have an entry fee, and an estimated 100 million visits to the outdoor places looked after by the charity. Together with 5.9 million members and more than 65,000 volunteers, they help to support the conservation charity in its work to care for nature, beauty, history.  For everyone, for ever.
