Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Gold Coast to Eliminate Over 170,000 Plastic Bottles Through New Initiative

Marriott International | Australia

Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Gold Coast is pleased to announce its latest initiative, which has seen the resort swap plastic bottles for glass or aluminium throughout its guestrooms, restaurants and meeting spaces in an effort to reduce its footprint on the environment. The initiative is set to eliminate 179,000 plastic bottles from landfill each year.

Delivered by water solution company, Vestal Water, the initiative is two-fold. Firstly, the resort has installed Zip HydroTaps – a tap system that delivers pure tasting chilled water - throughout; some in public spaces as water refill stations for guests, others in its restaurants and venues. Then, plastic bottles have been replaced with either glass or aluminium bottles: in guestrooms, reusable branded aluminium bottles are on offer for guests to use and refill during their stay, and even purchase to take home afterwards. In the hotel’s restaurants, bars and event spaces, reusable glass bottles are refilled by hotel associates and served to guests.

Partnering with Vestal Water has ensured that Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Gold Coast can reduce its impact on landfill waste whilst maintaining exceptional hydration options for guests. In addition to this, the efficient cooling technology in the Zip HydroTaps delivered by Vestal eliminates unnecessary mass refrigeration, which in turn is set to help decrease the resort’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative has been under testing at Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Gold Coast since September 2019. It comes from the resort’s ongoing commitment to reducing its footprint and delivering a long-term goal of removing plastic bottles from the resort. It also complements Marriott International’s Serve 360 program, which is the company’s dedicated global sustainability and social impact program that aims to decrease landfill, reduce food waste and reduce water and carbon intensity.

“We are leading the way in going plastic free,” said Mark Sexton, General Manager, Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Gold Coast. “With sustainability taking centre stage, we are thrilled to be on track to save 270 kilograms of plastic waste by August 2020, and a staggering 1.5 tons of waste by 2025.”

“Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort, Gold Coast has been the test ground for this initiative. Due to its success, the initiative is set to expand to other Marriott International hotels in Australia over the coming year. We are extremely proud to pioneer this progress and the expansion of this initiative to further reduce the use of plastic and continue the trend amongst other Marriott International hotels.”
