Paint Your Own Manekineko To Invite Good Luck at the Shiba Park Hotel

At the Shiba Park Hotel in Tokyo, Japan, there is “Japanese Culture Salon SAKURA” where guests can experience Japanese culture. Workshops are held daily, and hotel staff serves as instructors.

One of the workshops offered is the Manekineko Painting Workshop.

What exactly is a manekineko?

Manekinekois a small, cute cat figurine that are often displayed in shops and restaurants in Japan and China. Their name, which means “fortune cat” or “beckoning cat”, refers to the fact that a manekineko's raised paw appears to beckon onlookers.

Manekineko is said to have different powers depending on whether they are raising their left or right paw. Manekineko with raised left paws are said to attract customers, while manekineko with raised right paws are said to invite good luck and money. Some manekineko are depicted raising both paws, in which case they are said to invite both customers and financial luck.

Also, their colours are said to have the following meanings:

Calico: best at attracting good luck

White: boosts luck

Gold: boosts financial luck

Black: wards off evil/misfortune

Red: wards off disease

Pink: provides luck in romance

At the Shiba Park Hotel's Manekineko Painting Workshop, staff will explain these various meanings and cultural origins, and guests will also have the opportunity to create their own manekineko by painting an unglazed figurine.

The Japanese Culture Salon SAKURA's workshops are open to guests staying at the Shiba Park Hotel. The price for Manekineko Painting Workshop is ¥500 per person.  Please see Shiba Park Hotel's official website for the workshop schedule: https://en.shibaparkhotel.com/japanese-culture-experience/

We hope you take the opportunity to try the Manekineko Painting Workshop at the Shiba Park Hotel, where you can create a unique keepsake that will not only commemorate your trip to Japan, but also invite good luck into your life.
