NH Venezia Rio Novo, nestled amongst the canals of the Dorsoduro neighbourhood of Venice, is paying tribute to the region's links to the world of film with the launch of a new restaurant and bar - 8millimetri Cicchetti & Wine - named after the city's famous bar snacks and the 8mm film size introduced in the 1930s. Meanwhile, a series of events and film screenings further celebrate Venice's bonds with “the seventh art”.
Marrying traditional Venetian and Italian cuisine with an international cinema theme, 8millimetri Cicchetti & Wine's menu offers a selection of cicchetti, followed by appetisers, first and second courses and desserts whose names and ingredients recall famous films. Diners may choose to go back in time with Fagottini with Pumpkin inspired by Cinderella (Wilfred Jackson, 1950) and Tagliatelle with Hare named after Dove Vai in Vacanza (Alberto Sordi, 1958) or take a more modern route with a traditional dish of Ratatouille, sharing its name with Brad Bird's animation from 2007 or the Chocolate Cake with a Hint of Chilli inspired by Chocolat (Lasse Hallström, 2000).
In the bar, guests can steep themselves in a genuine Venetian tradition with a selection of cicchetti paired with a glass of wine from the finest local wineries or choose from one of the cocktails expertly mixed by the hotel's experienced bartenders. The innovative cocktail menu dovetails with the overall hotel concept, from James Bond's famous Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred, to the iconic Champagne Cocktail Humphrey Bogart used to make a seductive toast in Casablanca and the White Angel sipped by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Continuing the cinematic theme, the hotel has partnered with local cultural organisations - the Candiani Cultural Centre and the Cinema Circuit - to showcase a series of public events called AperiCinema. This August, 8millimetri Cicchetti & Wine will screen Italian and international films that can be enjoyed by guests, tourists and local residents along with an ombra de vin or cocktail. The film line-up will include
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (8 August) and Laura (15 August).
The collaboration extends to a photography exhibition titled Cinema and Venice where guests can see a collection of 17 black and white photographs representing Venice's cinematic history through its past, present and future displayed in the hotel's public spaces. The artworks will be displayed alongside the hotel's existing collection of film memorabilia, props and autographed journals.
Located in an historical building inspired by famous architects such as Angelo Scattolin, Luigi Vietti, Pier Luigi Nervi and Cesare Pea, NH Venezia Rio Novo is characterised by furnishings and design features that evoke the world of film-making. Its 144 rooms, including 53 with views over the bell towers and Sestiere canal, provide a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere while one of the hotel's most endearing features is its small but enchanting garden.
