Downtown San Angelo, Inc. and Art in UnCommon Places recently unveiled their revitalization efforts of Paint Brush Alley, located in the alley directly behind San Angelo's historic Concho Avenue.

The alley's theme is based on the movie “Giant” filmed in 1956 in Marfa, Texas. This critically acclaimed movie showcased the talents of Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean.

More than 50 artists lent their time and talents to the project.

Paint Brush Alley is located between Concho Ave and Twohig in the 200 Block of Irving.

In 2006 The Texas Downtown Association recognized Paint Brush Alley as the Best Public Improvement project in a downtown district and in 2008, the Texas Historical Commission Board of Directors gave special recognition to Downtown San Angelo, Inc. for this project. 

San Angelo has been recognized as a National Main Street City since 2008.  

About Art in Uncommon Places

Art in Uncommon Places (AIUP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in August 2006 by retired art teachers. Julie Raymond and Joy Thomas lead the creative vision for the public art. AIUP's 6,000 sq. ft. headquarters is located in the Cultural Art District of San Angelo, Texas. Since its founding, AIUP has played an integral role in the development of underserved, urban communities with highly-visible art installations. To this day, AIUP has collaborated with an overwhelming amount of local artists, volunteers, businesses, city officials and community members to produce and donate over 100 prominent art features throughout San Angelo and the Concho Valley. 

AIUP is known for its eccentric and creative style, pairing the most uncommon and unusual material, people, and geography together.

About San Angelo, Texas

With a population of more than 100,000 citizens, San Angelo is the largest city in Texas without an interstate highway running through it. San Angelo is located in the Concho Valley, a region of West Texas between the Permian Basin to the northwest, Chihuahuan Desert to the southwest, Osage Plains to the northeast, and Central Texas to the southeast.
