ATTRACTIONS AND TOURS

Seattle Waterfront Revitalization Begins
Starting in early 2019, the City of Seattle began a years-long waterfront revitalization program, beginning with the removal of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the replacement of the Elliott Bay Seawall. This project will connect Seattle’s downtown world-class hotels, restaurants and Pike Place Market to a new waterfront with twenty acres of improved parks, public spaces, pedestrian walkways and bike lanes. Additional project plans include critical utility infrastructure, new Alaskan Way and Elliott Way surface streets, and improved connections between center city neighborhoods and Elliott Bay. The full project is expected to be complete by 2024. Learn more at waterfrontseattle.org/overview.

Space Needle’s “Spacelift” Continues
The Space Needle, one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks, is undergoing a 360-degree “spacelift” and the majority of renovations are now open to the public. Century Project, the tower’s privately funded, $100 million renovation, has elevated the visitor experience by dramatically enhancing the view with more than 176 tons of glass. The Space Needle’s safety caging has been removed and replaced with eleven-foot-tall, open-air glass panels and titled glass benches called Skyrisers. With nothing but seamless glass between visitor’s panoramic views of the Pacific Northwest, guests can now sit back on the Skyrisers, and experience the intense feeling of floating above the Seattle skyline. The Space Needle’s renovation also includes the world’s first and only revolving glass floor, known as The Loupe, showcasing a never-before-seen downward view of Seattle’s iconic tower from 500 feet in the air. The Loupe opened to the public August 3, 2018 with overall renovations scheduled to be complete by winter 2019. For more information and updates, visit seewhatsup.space.

Museum of Flight Introduces APOLLO, The Exhibit
The US vs USSR Space Race of the 1960s was a time of superlatives as the space agencies of each country used their best and their brightest to get one step closer to putting footprints on the Moon. APOLLO, the exhibit, reflects those times with artifacts both towering and diminutive, each with powerful stories of the people behind them. The exhibit is the first public display of the long-lost rocket engines that launched the Apollo astronauts to the Moon. The historic Apollo 12 and 16 F-1 engines that boosted the mighty Saturn V Moon rockets were lost at the bottom of the sea for 43 years until discovered and raised by Seattle-based Bezos Expeditions in 2013. The sunken remains were our last missing links to the first adventures to another world. The aged and sculptural artifacts still show the scars of their service and of resting in the depths. For comparison, a full-scale F-1 rocket engine, on loan from the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, will also be displayed. The exhibit features many other unique artifacts from the Space Race, including Moon rocks, a lunar roving "moon buggy," the only Viking Mars lander on Earth, space suits and the first Apollo command module.

Destination Moon: Museum of Flight
The Museum of Flight was host to key space artifacts from The Smithsonian Institution featuring Apollo 11’s spaceship during the 50th anniversary of the historic mission. Seattle was the last stop on the four-city, two-year tour for “Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission” from April 13 through September 2, 2019. Seattle was also the host on the actual 50th anniversary date: July 20, 2019. The National Air and Space Museum has been preparing for “Destination Moon” since mid-2014. The project is possible due to a renovation and preparation for a permanent “Destination Moon” exhibit in DC. That exhibit is scheduled to open at the Air and Space Museum in 2020. Touring the Apollo artifacts ensured that they were on display during a prime period for celebrating space history. Learn more at museumofflight.org

New and Upcoming Exhibitions at the Seattle Art Museum and Olympic Sculpture Park
Experience the fierce beauty of the High Renaissance and Baroque periods. At the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park, Brazilian artist Regina Silveira creates a new site-specific installation for the PACCAR Pavilion. Ascend Prime Steak and Sushi is one of two U.S. Restaurants to Serve Olive Wagyu Beef
Part of Chef Kevin Hee’s job as the culinary director for Ascend Prime Steak & Sushi in Bellevue is to find the best beef in the world. The restaurant opened last June and since has gained a reputation for their highly executed seafood, sushi, and prime steak from around the world. After extensive research, Hee settled on dry and wet-aged domestic beef, domestic Wagyu from Mishima Ranch (owned by Beecher’s Kurt Dammier), and imported Wagyu from Australia and Japan. Based upon availability and verbally shared with guests at the table is Olive Wagyu Beef from Shodoshima, Japan – the rarest beef in the world. Olive Wagyu is sourced directly from three small farms in Kagawa Prefecture that upcycle wasted olive pulp from olive oil production. In 2018, Seattle-based company, Crowd Cow became the first company to import and make Olive Beef directly available to American consumers. Ascend is one of only two restaurants in the U.S. that offer the Shodoshima Olive Beef. Learn more at ascendprime.com.

CONVENTION NEWS

Convention Center Breaks Ground on Additional Facility, Summit
The Convention Center officially broke ground August 14, 2018 on an additional convention facility, the Summit. Construction has begun at the King County-owned Metro Transit station, one block from the existing Convention Center facility. The project was approved by Seattle’s City Council and the master use permit has been approved. This site, augmented by certain adjacent properties, will yield an additional facility to the existing Convention Center– one large enough to successfully attract the size of national conventions that want to come to Seattle. Seattle’s Pine Street Group is the project manager; together with LMN Architects, they have designed beautiful program spaces and continue to move the project forward. The general contractor is Clark/Lewis, a joint venture of Clark Construction and Lease Crutcher Lewis. The overall development is currently envisioned with up to 255,000 square feet of heavy-load exhibition space on two levels, 120,000 square feet of meeting rooms, a full service kitchen and 60,000 square feet of ballroom, freight loading and support space. Projected opening is 2022. Learn more at www.visitseattle.org/meeting-planners/convention-center/summit-overview/.

Illuminating Public Art at the Convention Center
The Convention Center has partnered with a new mobile app STQRY (“pronounced “story”) to showcase its popular public art collection of over 100 works on display. STQRY provides a novel, interactive way for visitors to actively engage with arts, culture, science, and other attractions in their area. The Convention Center is the first to be featured on the app. Using STQRY on a mobile device, visitors can easily locate and explore sculpture, paintings, multimedia, and other works on display at Convention Center. Other organizations participating with STQRY include many of Convention Center’s art partners such artists, museums, galleries, corporations, foundations, private collectors and the government.

Streetscaping Along Convention Center Evokes Northwest Woodlands
As part of the Pike/Pine corridor renovation project, the Convention Center is beautifying the sidewalk along the Pike Street entrance to the building. The addition of high Cascade granite boulders and a vast selection of trees and plants, including Coast Redwood, Sword Fern, Azalea, Wood’s Rose, Wild Ginger, Sweet Woodruff, Trillium, Creeping Mahonia, and Fragrant Sweet Box, among others, is designed to create a stunning aesthetic as well as a safe walking path for pedestrians. A complete lighting upgrade along Pike and Eighth improves visibility for foot traffic. The large-scale planters ringed with boulders coupled with giant coniferous trees and understory plants complement cascading granite pavers to evoke a walk in the woods of the Pacific Northwest.

Seattle Airport Infrastructure Growth Continues
Airport projects over the next five years total $1.9 billion, including renovation and expansion of the north satellite, a new International Arrivals Facility, a new centralized, high-efficiency baggage system, and the reconstruction of the center runway (completed in December 2015). Airport officials are considering up to $10 billion on future facility upgrades as part of a Sustainable Airport Master Plan, including an estimated 35 additional gates.

A $636 million modernization of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s North Satellite will include eight new gates with a 240-foot extension of the building to the west, add an upper level mezzanine, more than double the existing dining and retail square footage and offer a rooftop Alaska Airlines lounge with views of the Olympic Mountains. Groundbreaking took place in the first quarter of 2017 with phase one to be completed in 2019 and the full facility upgrade opening in 2021. The project represents an unprecedented working arrangement between the Port of Seattle, which operates the airport, and Alaska Airlines, Sea-Tac’s largest airline and the sole tenant of the North Satellite.
