Ink, the publishers of easyJet Traveller magazine, create Game of Thrones-inspired ice lollies to celebrate the final season of the world's biggest TV show
The April special issue of the inflight magazine was produced 'in association with Visit Westeros', and has four covers featuring ice lollies themed for houses Stark, Lannister, Greyjoy and Targaryen
LONDON: Ink, the publishers of easyJet Traveller magazine, is celebrating the final season of the world's biggest TV show with a special issue of the magazine, produced 'in association with Visit Westeros'. The April issue includes a travel guide to the best destinations in 'Game of Thrones country', including a city break in King's Landing, a rustic retreat in historic Winterfell and a (white) walking tour Beyond the Wall.
Scenes in these fictional locations were filmed in Croatia, Scotland and Iceland.
The issue has four different covers, each featuring a real ice lolly designed to match a Game of Thrones house:
House Stark
Frozen yogurt topped with desiccated coconut 'snow'
House Lannister
Lemon-flavoured ice topped with rich honey and edible gold
House Targaryen
Strawberry-flavoured ice drizzled with gory raspberry sauce
House Greyjoy
Blue slush topped with waves of white chocolate
The lollies were designed by food stylist Seiko Hatfield and photographed by Louise Hagger.
“The challenge was finding the flavour that matched the house,” says Hatfield. “My favourite was House Stark. I love frozen yogurt and reckon Jon Snow would too.”
Inside the magazine, the Game of Thrones travel guide covers the six best destinations in Europe for fans:
Dragonstone (the island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, near Bilbao, Spain) The Iron Islands (Ballintoy Harbour, near Belfast, Northern Ireland)
The Water Gardens of Dorne (the Alcázar of Seville, Spain)
Beyond the Wall (Vatnajökull glacier, in Iceland)
Winterfell (Doune Castle, near Edinburgh, Scotland) King's Landing (Dubrovnik, Croatia)
easyJet Traveller editor Jonny Ensall says: “The show is a phenomenon, so much so that Game of Thrones tourism is on the rise. We wanted to capture that enthusiasm in a funny, tongue-in-cheek way and imagine how a cheerily upbeat travel guide to Westeros would sound. Luckily, the real destinations where the show was filmed are all lovely, and well worth a visit.”
Game of Thrones has contributed significantly to tourism in Europe. For example, since the show first premiered on HBO in 2011, tourism in Dubrovnik (which stands in for King's Landing on the show) has seen an increase of 9 to 12% annually, according to the Dubrovnik Tourist Board.
Images and videos of the ice lollies, in a variety of formats, are available on request.
