- Over three-quarters of Brits don't enjoy having other people around them at the beach
- Over a third of Brits said they seek quiet and secluded beaches on holiday
- Beach experts, Travel Republic, reveal Europe's most blissful beaches
Sun, sea, sand and no one else is what Brits are craving for their beach holidays this year, as 84% of Brits admit they don't enjoy having other people around them at the beach.
Having to deal with loud music (29%), inappropriate swimwear (16%) and people posing for Instagram snaps (11%), are just some of the annoyances making Brits seek remote and secluded beaches, in a study by Travel Republic that surveyed the beach habits of over 2,000 holidaymakers.
When it comes to choosing a beach destination, high on the checklist is a beautiful vista and calm atmosphere; over a third of holidaymakers place an importance on visiting a quiet beach and 52% wanting picturesque sea views to create their ideal holiday.
When asked what would make the perfect beach, 30% of Brits said either an empty beach or nobody else there would be their utopia. More obscure answers for the perfect beach included those with make-up stations and a tech library to borrow tablets.
The research also showed that when Brits are at their perfect beach, the most popular beach pastimes (43%) are reading and snoozing in the sun, and if someone happens to stroll by we can't resist a bit of people watching (37%).
As Brits continue to plan and book their all-important summer holidays, beach experts at Travel Republic have identified some of the most remote beaches in Europe along with offering a month long discount on European summer holidays to help in the search for the perfect summer holiday.

Europe's Blissful Beaches
Spain
- Following the winding roads north of Barcelona and towards the coast, is the small and stylish town of Begur. Full of fantastic restaurants and boutique hotels, the town has become popular with locals but is still relatively new for UK tourists. This hidden gem town boasts beautiful golden sand beaches such as Sa Tuna or Sa Rascassa. These charming little cove beaches, have restaurants just metres from the sea where you can experience delicious Catalan dishes.
- In the south of Majorca, not far from popular Magaluf is the small and enchanting bay of Cala Cap Falco. The sandy beach is almost completely hidden by a pine forest on approach, but despite its location, it doesn't get overcrowded. The water is clear and shallow and there are shaded areas under trees if needed for uninterrupted views out to the horizon.
- Known as the king of beaches, the vast and natural Cofete beach located in the south of Fuerteventura is breath taking beach, thanks to its dramatic scenery. Stretching over 11km long with a mountain range backdrop, it is the perfect beach for long walks and listening to the waves crash in. Whilst it remains undiscovered by tourists, it has become a popular film location appearing in Exodus: Gods and Kinds and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Greece
- Crystal clear waters as blue as the sky with dreamy pink coral sand is how to describe the beautiful beach of Elafonisi in the South West region of Crete. The tempting warm waters of the lagoon is generally quite shallow, making it perfect for those who want to dip their toes in the water before relaxing on the soft sand.
Italy
- With silky sand and clear blue waters, visitors will believe they are on a remote island in the Caribbean instead of Sardinia in Italy. The beautiful beach of Spiaggia Bidderosa is part of the Bidderosa Nature Reserve and comprises five charming coves, each offering privacy, and enchanting scenery.
Portugal
- The small bay of Praia da João de Arens is ideal for anyone looking to escape the large holiday resorts of the Algarve. The bay's secluded position amongst a rugged cliff landscape is the beach's main appeal as the formations create fantastic natural scenery. Natural gateways in the stone and holes in rocks are waiting to be explored after a lazy morning relaxing on the soft sand.
- The idyllic Praia de Galapinhos, set in the Arrabida Natural Park has won a few best beach awards, but it remains relatively empty due to access via steep and uneven path. The beach is an hour's drive from Lisbon but it is worth the trip to see the crescent of golden-white sand and swim in the calm crystal clear azure waters.
Cyprus
- Lara beach, to the north of Paphos in west Cyprus, is a large sandy stretch overlooking the Mediterranean Coast. This remote beach not only has beautiful golden sand and crystal clear waters, but it is also a sanctuary to protect turtles and create a safe site for them to lay their eggs.
Bulgaria
- Part of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, north of Varna is the beautiful beach cove of Bolata. Located in the Kaliakra Nature Reserve, the beach is impressive for its turquoise water and red cliffs towering around it. It is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the vista, away from the party scenes in the south.
Croatia
- Located a short walk from the main centre of Dubrovnik, is a small oasis from the crowds in the walled city – Sveti Jakov. The beach is pebbly and has shade spots thanks to the pine trees, but what makes this a beautiful hidden gem is the mesmerising view out to the Adriatic Sea and the famous city's walls.
