MIKIMOTO 125th Anniversary

This year marks 125 years since MIKIMOTO founder Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in the cultivation of pearls. As the originator of the cultured pearl, MIKIMOTO continues to devise a wide array of creations in its enhanced pursuit of beauty. Mikimoto embarked upon the path of becoming a jeweller in order to fulfil his dream of adorning women the world over with pearls.

One stop on Mikimoto's journey that helped to bring about his worldwide recognition is a place located very far away from Japan: Paris, France. MIKIMOTO held an exhibition at the 1937 Paris International Exposition featuring its yaguruma sash clip, which was met with high commendation.

MIKIMOTO subsequently opened a shop in Paris' Place Vendôme, which houses only the most globally-acclaimed jewellers.

Today, MIKIMOTO is known among jewellery enthusiasts around the globe for its truly authentic elegance.

The book is the world's most authoritative volume on the legacy of pearls and its iconic place in fashion and fine art. The iconic pearl necklace takes the reader on a universal journey with images of Renaissance queens to Maharajas, Hollywood starlets, and modern influences such as Lady Gaga, Grace Kelly, Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie, Michelle Obama, all making pearl necklaces a part of their wardrobes. The Pearl Necklace explores the legacy of lustrous strands through fine art and fashion, with an introductory essay by award-winning journalist and jewellery historian Vivienne Becker, author of The Pearl Necklace. It reminds us why the pearl necklace has long been the ultimate object of fascination and fantasy to this day.
