InterContinental Hong Kong

InterContinental Hong Kong's General Manager Claus Pedersen is delighted to announce that the hotel has just achieved Platinum Certification from EarthCheck.  InterContinental Hong Kong is the first hotel in Hong Kong and the first IHG property globally to achieve this prestigious certification.

This award follows ten years of continuous EarthCheck certification (inclusive of five consecutive years with Gold Certification).

EarthCheck is the world's leading scientific benchmarking certification and advisory group for travel and tourism. Since 1987, it has helped businesses, communities and governments to deliver clean, safe, prosperous and healthy destinations for travellers to visit, live, work and play.

The EarthCheck Certified programme shows participating organisations how to measure, organise and report their environmental and social management processes across the organisation. The programme requires that businesses measure, monitor and make ongoing improvements in the key performance areas.

IHG Green Engage™

The Green Engage system is IHG's group-wide, online sustainability programme.
It helps our hotels to manage and report their use of energy, carbon, water and waste, and minimise their overall utility costs and environmental impact. The system recommends over 200 Green Solutions that are action items hotels can implement on property to build and operate sustainable hotels.

InterContinental Hong Kong focuses on the following environmental initiatives:

Green Purchasing
We purchase food from reliable sources with FSMS Standards and from local organic vendors. We also purchase recycled & recyclable products and select vendors who have attained Environmental Certificates and implemented sustainability policies.

Waste Recycling & Reduction
The total weight of waste recycled from our hotel from 2013-2017 was over 2,000,000kg. Recycled waste includes glass bottles, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, food waste & even used cooking oil and coffee grinds. We also participate in the FoodLink Foundation, with selected food items donated to help provide nutritious and healthy meals to those in need.

Energy Savings
We have conducted a comprehensive retro-commissioning exercise, a systematic investigation process for optimising the operation & maintenance of building equipment and systems.  Other energy projects include LED lamps, heat pump, and heat recovery system and the use of solar control film.  As a result, the electricity consumption per occupied room was reduced over 11% between 2013- 2017.
