Inca Rail Enchances Journey to Machu Picchu With New Gps Activated on-Board Information System

Inca Rail

Following on from the inauguration of its new service, The 360° Machu Picchu Train, Inca Rail has further enhanced its on-board experience with the introduction of a new GPS-activated information system that passengers can download to their mobile devices.  The free tool provides an interactive map of the train's route through the Sacred Valley, e-books, local music, games and a GPS-activated audio guide to the culture, history and gastronomy of the areas through which the train passes.  The system is accessed at the start of each journey by connecting to the free WIFI available at Inca Rail's new waiting lounges or on-board the 360 train and visiting www.mapitrain.com.

“The majority of tourists to Machu Picchu visit the Inca citadel by taking a long day trip from Cuzco or the Sacred Valley, with visitors spending up to seven hours of their day on board a train.  It was important to us to enhance our passenger experience from a simple A to B transit to an enriching voyage that becomes part of their overall experience of visiting Machu Picchu,” commented Armando Pareja, general manager of Inca Rail. “We recently completed a USD 12 million project to upgrade our entire train fleet and services, making the Inca Rail fleet the most modern on the route between Cuzco and Machu Picchu.  This new information system is the next phase in this upgrade, designed to delight, inform and engage our passengers as part of a service that gives focus on exceptional authentic hospitality and gastronomy.”

A new train service introduced by Inca Rail in March 2018, The 360° Machu Picchu Train is Peru's most scenic train, constructed with dome-like high visibility panoramic windows with in-built UV protection offering unobstructed views of the soaring Andes mountain range as they journey to and from Machu Picchu.  At the centre of the train is an open-air observation area from which passengers can step out and breathe in the crisp mountain air and take photos of the dramatic landscape.  The 360° Machu Picchu Train has all the connectivity that modern travellers demand, including USB ports at each seat for charging smartphones and other devices.

Custom-designed by Inca Rail, The 360° Machu Picchu Train service consists of two sets of three carriages, carrying up to 248 passengers a day on two routes between Poroy and Machu Picchu, and between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu.  The 360° Machu Picchu Train is bookable on www.incarail.com and is priced from USD 78 (from GBP 56) per person one way during low season, rising according to seasons.

About IncaRail

Inca Rail first began operations on the narrow gauge railway line between Cusco and Machu Picchu in 2009.  In July 2016 it came under new management when The Carlyle Group made a significant equity investment in order to improve customer service and maintain current high standards of reliability and safety.  Inca Rail is investing approximately USD 12 million in upgrading its train fleet and services, meaning it will soon have the most modern and up to date fleet operating in Peru.  Inca Rail expects to carry 540,000 passengers between Cusco and Machu Picchu during 2017, having already increased its market share from 20% to 31% since the beginning of 2017, with a view to further increasing this to 35% by 2021.  As part of Inca Rail's ethos of environmental respect, it practices and promotes responsible tourism at every available opportunity. This involves taking all actions conducive to minimizing the environmental impact of its operations, such as using fuel additives designed to minimize CO2 emissions.  www.incarail.com
