Cheapest holiday ice-creams revealed
A survey conducted by beach holiday specialist On the Beach, has revealed Vanilla to be the nation's favourite ice-cream flavour, with almost one in three Brits choosing the classic as their number one choice.
Whilst ice cream may be enjoying something of a moment right now, with the rise of artisan gelato outlets, liquid nitrogen parlours and even a dedicated exhibition at the British Museum, it seems we're a nation of traditionalists at heart when it comes to our favourite scoop.
The survey of 1,000 holidaymakers asked ice-cream loving Brits to rank their favourite flavours and found that, whilst 32% named Vanilla as their flavour of choice, chocolate came a close second, scooping more than a quarter (29%) of votes.
According to a recent Mintel report, Britons spend a mouth-watering £1.1bn a year on ice cream.
The On the Beach survey found that retro flavours still reign supreme, with many Brits favouring Mint Choc Chip (26%), Strawberry (25%) and the classic Raspberry Ripple (13%).
The nation's favourite ice cream flavours:
- Vanilla
- Chocolate
- Mint Choc Chip
- Strawberry
- Raspberry
- Coconut
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
- Cookies and Cream
- Rum and Raisin
- Butterscotch
Destinations offering the cheapest scoop!
As the nation celebrates National Ice Cream month, which takes place every July, and with millions of British families jetting off on their annual European beach holiday, research conducted by On the Beach also revealed which popular beach resorts offer the cheapest ice-creams.
Antalya, the ever-popular Turkish resort grabs the top spot, with a single scoop of our favourite icy treat costing just 80p, whilst holidaymakers topping up their tan on the Spanish Costa Brava can enjoy a scoop of their favourite flavoured ice cream for just 87p.
The research revealed Malta as the third cheapest destination to enjoy an ice cream costing just 88p, whilst Split, on Croatia's stunning Dalmatian Coast grabs fourth place with a single ice cream costing just 96p.
Although the price of an ice cream on the Greek island of Rhodes breaks the £1 barrier, a single scoop is still, on average, much cheaper than it is at home, costing just £1.15 and making it the fifth cheapest beach resort to enjoy an ice cream.
Cheapest ice creams in the sun:
- Antalya (Turkey) – 80p
- Costs Brava (Spain) – 87p
- Malta – 88p
- Split (Croatia) – 96p
- Rhodes (Greece) - £1.15
Alan Harding, Marketing Director at On the Beach comments:
“Ice cream is one of our favourite holiday treats, especially during a hot summer's day, and whilst some people will no doubt enjoy the latest flavours such as Pistachio and Rocky Road, our survey reveals the majority of Brits prefer the traditional flavours.”
“Unfortunately, ice creams have become quite expensive in the UK, but for those heading to one of our most popular European beach destinations this summer, a family of five can still enjoy a cool ice cream for less than a fiver.”
