With its backdrop of Alpine peaks, Mainau Island is a jewel, floating on Lake Constance. Why is it famous? Because of the gardens, which are a botanical delight with a wide diversity of flowers and shrubs, trees and plants, all flourishing in a near subtropical climate. And this summer is extra special: the theme is Africa. Under the title of "Baobab and Bonobo – the Fascination of Africa", gardeners have created a savannah, with native plants, like the baobab (Africa's iconic tree of life) and stylized animals, such as the endangered bonobo chimpanzee.

Something for everyone

Open year round, the island attracts some 1.2 million visitors, making it one of Lake Constance's most popular destinations. Surrounding the 18th-century palace are flower-filled gardens, one of Germany's largest butterfly houses, a specially-designed children's adventure playground and a collection of magnificent trees, many more than 150 years old. The Mainau Flower Year, from mid-March to the end of October, starts with thousands of tulips, followed by hundreds of rhododendrons, fragrant roses, perennials and dazzling dahlias. In summer, palm trees and a collection of citrus provide a real Mediterranean feel. The credit for this successful attraction goes to the late Count Bernadotte, a member of the Swedish royal family, who transformed his great-grandfather's summer home into the “Flower Island”.

African Savannah meets European Baroque

This summer, Mainau offers two worlds that could not be more different. Stroll across manicured European lawns and then into an East African landscape. In front of the pink and white Baroque palace, gardeners have created a savannah. In the tall grasses are umbrella acacia trees and baobabs, with silhouettes of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. Learn about the Continent's challenges for both people and the environment. And, in the island's restaurants, enjoy dishes inspired by exotic African recipes.

Autum is magical!

The autumn highlight is the Gräfliches Schlossfest, the Count's Palace Festival (October 3 to 7), when grand rooms in the palace that are usually closed to the public are opened. With the theme of Noblesse Oblige, specially selected exhibitors showcase elegant designer clothing and accessories, including one-of-a-kind jewellery. Extra special are the latest creations from Countess Diana's own hat studio. Set against a background of music and historic fashion shows, this is the perfect place for early Christmas shopping!

The Swedish Connection

The Bernadotte family was originally from Sweden, so Swedish traditions are part of island life. December 12 to 13, for example, bring celebrations for Saint Lucia's Day, with music and a procession of children, dressed in white and holding flickering candles. They are led by a member of the Bernadotte family, who takes the role of the Blessed Lucia, complete with a traditional Swedish crown of greenery and real candles! What a way to brighten winter's dark days!
