Glass-bottom boat turtle tours and an historical hike are among the new activities at Fitzroy Island Resort which will soon reveal newly refurbished rooms.
Home to secluded Nudey Beach, Australian's Best Beach for 2018, rainforest-clad Fitzroy Island is just a 45-minute boat ride from Cairns city.
Fitzroy Island Resort General Manager Tim Moloney said turtles were a favourite with visitors who regularly encountered them while swimming and snorkelling in the clear waters of Nudey Beach and Welcome Bay.
“Glass-bottom boat tours take guests to the best locations to see soft corals and marine life including green sea turtles and the occasional loggerhead turtle,” he said.
“Fitzroy Island's sheltered waters are favoured by these endangered animals with more than 700 green sea turtles hatching on the island's beaches in the past two months.
“The island is also home to the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre where visitors can meet Jet, an eight-year-old green sea turtle rescued off Fitzroy Island in July 2017, and learn about the threats to turtles on the Great Barrier Reef.
“The volunteer operated, non-profit centre is dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles with the proceeds from tours going towards the care of the turtles.
“Fitzroy Island is also supporting the Reef Restoration Foundation with the establishment of the Great Barrier Reef's first offshore coral nursery in the island's waters.
“The pilot program is growing corals on frames which will be transplanted on sections of the Reef affected by bleaching to improve the resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.
“In addition to the Great Barrier Reef experiences, Fitzroy Island is a National Park with beautiful rainforest walks and a summit hike to the lighthouse.
“We have produced a self-guided booklet showing the historical connections of these trails, so walkers can identify evidence of military occupation during World War II and locate various objects left behind by the lighthouse keepers and their families.
“Guests will enjoy new lighter, contemporary styling with a soft room refurbishment underway featuring sheer drapes, lime-washed floors and blue and white accents to reflect the spectacular ocean surrounds of Fitzroy Island.”
