The Rubens at the Palace

The Rubens at The Palace hotel, which overlooks the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace, has opened an authentic Indian restaurant called The Curry Room. The new restaurant's inspiring three-course menu blends Indian and South African influences and serves dishes prepared with the finest ingredients and spices.

In a rich, warm setting with vibrant red decor, copper accents and crockery imported from India, the 'recipe' for The Curry Room is simple – traditional Indian dishes bursting with flavor.

Arun Kumar, The Curry Room's chef, worked closely with Kevin Joseph, executive chef at The Oyster Box Hotel in South Africa (The Rubens' sister property), to design the menu. Joseph is a celebrated chef in South Africa, and his vast experience launching Indian restaurants across The Red Carnation Hotel Collection – including The Curry Buffet at The Oyster Box in Durban, and The Curry Room at The Old Government House Hotel & Spa in Guernsey – was essential to The Rubens' new restaurant concept.

Instead of offering the usual à la carte options, Chef Kumar and Chef Joseph designed an exceptional all-inclusive menu that encompasses Indian starters, entrées and desserts. The generous selection of samosa, poppadum and condiment starters tantalize the taste buds, while the choice of main dishes offers something to suit every palate: Kevin Joseph's traditional KwaZulu-Natal fare such as lamb curry and prawn and chicken curry brings the subtle spices of South Africa to the forefront, alongside Indian favorites such as spicy beef vindaloo, vegetable korma, Bengal fish curry, and butter chicken. All entrées are served with basmati rice, the chef's vegetable side dish and traditional naan bread. To finish, guests can indulge from a selection of four tasty desserts: Indian infused Kulfi ice cream, fresh papaya and sorbet, traditional trifle, or baked vanilla cheesecake prepared from the legendary recipe of Red Carnation Hotels' Founder & President, Bea Tollman.

The restaurant serves cuts of meat hand-selected by The Rubens' butcher, Aubrey Allen, Royal Warrant holder to Her Majesty The Queen, and the fish is locally sourced from Billingsgate Market.

A wide selection of old and new world wines have been carefully selected to complement the dining experience, including a fine selection from Bouchard Finlayson, The Rubens' sister vineyard in South Africa. Popular Indian beers such as Kingfisher and Cobra are also available.

The Rubens at the Palace recently completed a multi-million dollar refurbishment which included upgrades to many of its rooms and guest areas, as well a complete overhaul of the hotel's dining options. The Curry Room is the final addition to The Rubens' new look and sits alongside the striking red Cavalry Bar and the hotel's elegant new fine-dining restaurant, The English Grill.

“Our new Curry Room restaurant is the final piece of the puzzle in our immense refurbishment project,” said Malcolm Hendry, general manager of The Rubens at the Palace. “The talented Chef Kumar and our friendly Restaurant Manager Mohan Senchuri look forward to welcoming visitors to the new restaurant for an authentic taste of India, right in the heart of vibrant Victoria.”

The Curry Room at The Rubens is open from Wednesday to Monday (closed all day Tuesday and for lunch on Saturday and Sunday). Lunch is served between 12:30pm and 2:30pm and dinner from 5:30pm to 11:00pm. The all-inclusive three-course menu is priced at $47.00 per person.
