Luxury safari specialist Sanctuary Retreats will launch the exclusive Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp in Tanzania in December 2017. This extraordinary new escape, which will be based in three set locations across the Serengeti, offers guests an unrivalled, front row experience of the movement of a million-plus wildebeest and zebra as they follow the fresh grasses across the Serengeti plains during the annual migration season. The launch is the latest in an extensive investment programme taking place across the Sanctuary portfolio.
Kichakani is a Swahili word meaning 'in the bush' and Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp will offer ten luxury tents which can be packed up and moved along in a style evocative of the pioneering explorers of the 19th century, yet with all modern comforts. An elegant and contemporary take on the classic camp style, the new five-star tents will offer distinct and stylish accommodation under canvas. Handcrafted luggage, easy chairs and characterful cabinets and desks, have all been designed to be perfectly portable. Each tent has a personal attendant and a private wooden deck on which to enjoy a just-brewed cup of Tanzania's finest coffee whilst the ensuite bathrooms feature authentic bucket showers. Gym and yoga kits are provided for a workout in the natural and peaceful surroundings. The sand-coloured canvas-constructed camp leaves little impact on the environment, casting a lighter ecological shadow.
In addition to the new safari tents, the camp will also feature a central canopied main tent with lounge and dining areas. This tent can be opened on the sides offering incredible views out over the surrounding landscape. The Chef and his team are skilled in preparing a range of international flavours which can be enjoyed alongside kachumbari (traditional Tanzanian salsa), coconut beans, paprika, cinnamon and chilli from nearby Zanzibar. Evenings can be spent gathered by the traditional fire pit exchanging stories under starry skies and listening to fascinating tales of wildlife encounters from the passionate guides.
The three set locations throughout the year are based on the migration path offering wildlife viewing from open plains, sweeping grasslands and rocky kopjes. The stars of this seasonal path are wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's gazelles, and the predators that this migratory journey attracts. The Serengeti is known for having the Big Five; cheetahs are a highlight, along with wild dog, giraffe, waterbuck and impala.
Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp will open on 2 December 2017 in the Southern Serengeti and the camp will be located in Southern Serengeti (2 December 2017 – 31 March 2018), Central Serengeti (26 May 2018 – 15 July 2018), and Northern Serengeti (29 July 2018 – 15 November 2018).
Prices at Sanctuary Kichakani Serengeti Camp start from £381 per person per night based on two people sharing for a minimum 4 night stay including all meals and drinks (excluding premium brands), scheduled game viewing activities and return transfers to and from the airstrip to the camp.
