A small island community in coastal Papua New Guinea will be recognised in Marrakech next month, at international Luxury Tourism's night of nights.
The Karawara people, in partnership with Australian travel business, Oceania Expeditions, are finalists in the Pure Awards 'Community Engagement' category for their 'Kabakon Survivor' experience.
Worlds away from the traditional notions of luxury travel, Kabakon Survivor invites guests into an alternate reality, where they live on an uninhabited tropical island in Papua New Guinea, for four days.
The partnership engages the local community, supplies an added income stream and encourages a growing pride in local traditions, customs and culture.
The Karawara islanders visit guests daily, supplying their extensive knowledge, time and rich customs, teaching how to forage, hunt, weave, connect and play. Guests are then left to their own devices until the next visit.
“This model of tourism is so exciting for us,” Ray Andrews of Oceania Expeditions said. “And to be recognised by our luxury travel peers is just fantastic.”
'Kabakon is the garden isle for the Karawara people. So it's lush and full of fruit, vegetables, marine harvest … it really is that quintessential tropical paradise. By inviting people into their experience, the Karawara people are really setting a fantastic standard for sustainable travel.
“It can feel a bit isolated out there, sometimes,” he said. “To imagine this story of the Karawara Islanders, who still live a life of traditional self-sufficiency without modern commodities, will be shared at luxury travel's night-of-nights in Marrakech, next month just shows how marvellously varied the world is!
“We're so proud to be a part of it!”
Voting for the 2017 Pure Awards is open now, and platforms finalists across seven categories.
