QT Sydney, the leading design hotel in Australia, has been awarded the “Best City Hotel, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific” at last night's Travel & Leisure World's Best Awards held in New York City.
QT Sydney and Bondi's General Manager, Rhys Jones accepted the award from Travel & Leisure's Editor-In-Chief Nathan Lump at an exclusive cocktail event attended by top travel industry leaders and media.
"We are so honoured to have been recognised with this major award by the readers of one of the most prestigious travel publications in the world," said Rhys. "We are truly in a golden age of travel distinguished by changing consumer needs and global trends; and this award is indicative of a shift in the industry away from larger corporate and waterfront hotels towards more contemporary lifestyle-driven, city-center properties, with QT leading the way in Australia."
QT Sydney, which opened in September 2012, is the culmination of an extensive renovation of two of Sydney's most beloved landmark Art Deco buildings, the State Theatre and the former Gowings department store.
The hotel's bold interior design was spearheaded by renowned Australian designer Nic Graham, who designed the public spaces, and architect Shelley Indyk, who oversaw the design of the hotel's rooms and suites. The hotel boasts an extensive contemporary and digital art collection curated by QT art curator Amanda Love. QT Sydney is also home to the destination spa and vintage barber shop at spaQ, overseen by spa consultant Naomi Gregory.
Renowned chef and restaurateur Robert Marchetti, QT Hotels Creative Food Director curates the menus at the European-style brasserie, Gowings Bar & Grill, the Parlour Lane Roasters café/aperitivo bar and hip Gilt Lounge cocktail bar.
Costume designer Janet Hine outfits the stylish QT Sydney staff, while Anna Roberts styles the rooms and curates the Qtique boutique with the most cutting-edge design objets.
The award follows the recent inclusion of QT Sydney's new sister hotel, QT Melbourne, on the Travel+Leisure It List 2017 of the best new hotels in the world. QT Sydney was also previously awarded for the restoration of the historic State Theatre and Gowings buildings by the Australian Institute of Architects.
The full results of the 22nd annual Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2017 readers' survey are available now at www.travelandleisure.com/worldsbest and will be featured in the August 2017 issue of the magazine.
