Walks: St John's in the Vale and Blencathra – great photo opportunity – classic image : Scafell Pike and Derwent Water

The iconic Castlerigg Stone Circle commands a wonderful panorama overlooking the valley of St Johns in the Vale, and the mountain of Blencathra. Our choice of walks ranges from an easier walk along this green valley, to a rocky ascent to the summit of this popular fell.

Easier Walk: In the shadow of Castle Rock we walk along the Vale of St John below High Rigg. We reach the highlight of Castlerigg Stone Circle (c3,000BC) before we return to Keswick and the launch back. 7 miles (11km) with 1,050 feet (320m) of ascent.

Medium Walk: From the north end of Thirlmere we enjoy the wonderful low-lying fell of High Rigg before joining the same route as the Easier Walk. 8½ miles (13.5km) with 1,450 feet (440m) of ascent.

Harder Walk: From Threlkeld, the steep and airy arête of Hall's Fell to the top of Blencathra is described by Wainwright as the finest way to any mountain top and is our challenge today. The route down is on grassy Blease Fell to the Blencathra Field Centre and over Latrigg to Portinscale. Some sections of scrambling, requiring a head for heights. 10½ miles (17 km) with 3,500 feet (1,060m) of ascent.

Return to house for evening meal.

Breakfast

Then join one of the below walks with picnic lunch (there are also HF guests on this break)

Walks: Scafell Pike and Derwent Water – fantastic chance to climb England's highest mountain

The green valley of Borrowdale offers stunning scenery and a breathtaking array of walks. Our Easier and Medium walks explore the valley and the shores of Derwent Water. If you want more of a challenge, the harder walk heads to the summit of Scafell Pike, England's highest peak.

Easier Walk: Deep in the Borrowdale Valley, we begin our walk from the pretty village of Rosthwaite over to Watendlath. Following Watendlath Beck we take a diversion to view Lodore Falls before strolling back along the shores of Derwent Water. 8 miles (13 km) with 1,550 feet (460m) of ascent.

Medium Walk: Initially we take the same paths as the easier walk but instead of dropping down to the shores of Derwent Water we continue to the beautiful setting of Ashness Bridge, from where we ascend Walla Crag before walking back via Keswick. 9 miles (14.5 km) with 2000 feet (620m) of ascent.

Harder Walk: The ascent of England's highest summit, Scafell Pike, is our objective today and we walk via Grains Gill and Esk Hause over rock large boulders and scree. We descend via the Corridor Route. Rough steep paths, requiring a head for heights, make this a challenging walk. 9 miles (14 km) with 3,150 ft (960 m) of ascent.

Return to house for evening meal (there is option to leave on this day after the walks)
