Hotels and campsites in the Costa Daurada have invested approximately €90 million on refurbishments and additional facilities ahead of the 2017 summer season, according to the Federation of Hostelry and Tourism in Tarragona (FEHT).

Nearly all of the 86 hotels found in the Costa Daurada's coastal towns of Salou, Cambrils and Vila-Seca, la Pineda have carried out improvements to their accommodation in the off-season, investing a total of nearly €50 million. Improvements include renovating rooms, adding 'interactive' swimming pools and new themed restaurants.

Campsites in the Costa Daurada and Terres de l'Ebre have also been preparing for the 2017 season with 56 sites investing approximately €40 million in order to improve facilities for visitors.

This number has been driven by the new 'Africa' accommodation built at Camping & Resort Sangulí Salou, which cost around €20 million to construct. The new resort includes African-themed safari tents and lodges, perfect for families looking for unique summer accommodation.

The Costa Daurada is expecting high occupation rates during the Easter holidays with local accommodation reporting strong advance bookings. Hotels are expected to reach 90 per cent capacity with more hotels open than during Easter 2016, while campsites (mobile homes) are forecast to have close to 100 per cent occupancy from 13 – 17 April and apartments are expecting close to 90 per cent during the same period.

These advance bookings have been supported by an increased number of sporting events taking place during this time, which has helped the destination move away from the last-minute bookings market - including the Mare Nostrum Cup, TGN Basketball Tournament, the Costa Daurada International Football Tournament and the sixth edition of World Dancesport.

The FEHT represents the whole tourism sector in the province of Tarragona, focussing on the towns of Salou, Cambrils and Vila-seca La Pineda. The Costa Daurada saw a rise in UK visitors in 2016 with a 24.4% year-on-year increase between 1 May and 15 September, according to data from PCT (Science and Technology Park for Tourism and Leisure of Catalonia).

“It's a very exciting time for the hotels and campsites in the Costa Daurada as they look ahead to a positive summer season in 2017. These large investments have been driven by a successful 2016 season and the changing demands of the modern traveller, who rightly expects world class facilities when on holiday.

“The opening of Ferrari Land is also expected to boost interest in the region, with hoteliers and campsite owners using this as an opportunity to raise the standards of accommodation to ensure repeat visitors in the years to come,” said David Batalla, President of the FEHT.
