Australia's first Hyatt Place hotel officially opened last night for business at a star-studded event featuring special guests including Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester, the joint owners of Essendon Fields' Lindsay Fox and Max Beck and entertainment by Guy Sebastian.

The new $60m Hyatt Place Melbourne, Essendon Fields is an important milestone in the development of Essendon Fields, representing its single largest investment and pushing the total number of jobs created at Essendon Fields since privatisation in 2001 to more than 6,000.

The new Hyatt Place Melbourne, Essendon Fields complements the existing hotel offers in Melbourne's north-west and, together with the new Australian Events Centre, generates opportunities for the region to capture a greater slice of Australia's multi-billion dollar conference, events and hospitality market.

“The official launch of the new Hyatt Place opens the front door of Essendon Fields to the rest of Melbourne. Not only is it strategically located at the entrance to Essendon Fields, but will make it possible for business or busy travellers to meet, organise conferences or just stay in Melbourne's north-west, a region that supports more people than the Gold Coast,'' said Chris Cowan, CEO of Essendon Fields.

“Hyatt Place's close proximity to Melbourne Airport (6.5km) and Melbourne's CBD (10km) means travellers coming to the north west of Melbourne can avoid all the busy-ness and congestion associated with the CBD,” he said.

“We are delighted to be working with the Hyatt Group on this important project. We searched for the best hotel operators in the world and the Hyatt Group's proposal to create Australia's first ever Hyatt Place perfectly fitted our need for a point of difference in the hotel and hospitality sector,'' added Chris.

We are delighted to collaborate with Essendon Fields and have the opportunity to bring the first Hyatt Place, a brand known around the world for delivering a modern and comfortable experience to Australia,” said Robert Dawson, Area Vice President, Pacific.

“Hyatt Place was designed for today's multi-tasking travellers 24/7 lifestyle by combining stylish design and practical amenities with forward-thinking technology and purposeful service. Hyatt Place Melbourne, Essendon Fields offers a fresh and friendly stay experience, ideal for business and leisure travellers.  We are confident that travellers to Essendon Fields, a strategic gateway on the aviation corridor into Melbourne, will find the comfort they want and the service they deserve at Hyatt Place,” added Robert.

The new 166-room Hyatt Place hotel forms a new precinct at Essendon Fields. It is located adjacent to the recently opened The Australian Events Centre and Mr McCracken bar and restaurant (open soon).

The hotel design concept was a collaboration between local architects Bruce Henderson Architects (BHA) and Jestico + Whiles (London). The final design and implementation was led by Graham Morrison, Director of BHA.  BHA was responsible for the interior design of the hotel as well as design and interiors of Mr McCracken and The Australian Events Centre.

In bringing the project to life, Graham Morrison, BHA Director said “The 166 room tower expresses a magical built form composition enhancing the aviation history of Essendon Fields with gold clad north and south wings delicately attached to a robust and solid spine,”

“The wings display the rhythm of motion associated with flight while the layered shrouds of stainless steel and lapped panels reflect the delicate construction techniques of historical aircraft manufacture. The shrouds of gold stainless steel panels will allow a constant display of changing colour, glow and reflection throughout the day offering a unique experience for visitors,” concluded Graham.
